Last night, my son’s flag football team had to forfeit because only 5 players could make the game. The rule is that the teams can still play for fun when that happens. The team his team played kept 6 players in the whole time even though the team they were playing only had 5. the opposing team won regardless because of the forfeit so why do that to a handful of first graders?

Why even play if it isn’t a competition? What’s the point of winning unfairly?

I’ve had this happen in an adult sports league when the other team didn’t have enough players. We lent the other team some players and went on.

Devils advocate here: the other team just wanted to play their kids that showed up to have fun. It’s not their fault your team didn’t show up. Not saying I agree with it.

As a coach I can tell you both teams decided to play it more as a practice.

Sounds like the other parents didn’t want their kids around you.

First graders aren't all into the "wining at all costs" attitude that mommy and daddy are. Kids just enjoy playing the game. So that's why you play the game, as first graders.

Because sports are about life lessons. Your kid was shown the importance of commitment and what happens when people you are counting on don’t come through.

You had a great opportunity to explain the situation to him and talk about the power of teamwork.

But being you, I’m sure you probably cuddled his little head and told him losing didn’t matter and then rewarded him with ice cream

For fun?
The other side probably felt it wouldn't be great to force one of their kids to sit out. Presumably they didn't have subs they could have. let play with your team?

Maybe the kids had fun and got a lot of exercise. Maybe they learned something about the sport. Maybe they enjoyed meeting new friends. Maybe they learned the importance of showing up for your teammates and the consequences of not showing up.

Maybe the focus shouldn’t have been placed on just winning even though I believe you teach kids to try to be winners. There was plenty of opportunity there for the kids to learn and grow.

Maybe you should change your focus.
