Most Underrated Songwriters

Who do you think are some of the most underrated songwriters in musical history? Who generally don’t get enough credit for their abilities?
I’ll start with a perfect example. Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The man was a true Southern poet. He never wrote anything down, the words came to him naturally and he could absolutely deliver. There are so many great examples of his work, “Tuesday’s Gone” “Simple Man” “Curtis Loew” and of course “Free Bird” to just name a few.
These songs were not pretentious, they were real down to the core. Ronnie wrote about real life the way he saw it and it has resonated with so many people. I just wish he would get a little more recognition for the incredible front-man/band leader he was and for the enduring songs he wrote.

Tom Waits. He is respected by many that know what's up, but the average person probably doesn't know much about him. He is one of the greatest songwriters ever as far as I am concerned.

Warren Zevon
And he's not exactly underrated but I'm always amazed at how often I turn people on to John Prine.
