He was one if not the best defender of all time.
There are many in the conversation for best defenders of all time. None of them are in the GOAT conversation unless they have offense to match.

Nobody is disputing that Bill Russell was a great defender. I’m saying he only played on one side of the ball, and that’s what makes him incredibly overrated.

That is a dumbass statement, there is a reason he is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all-time. Matching up against Chamberlain and winning is the same as beating Jordan.
Because his team with many other all-stars won a bunch of championships when there were 8 teams in the league. “Chamberlain vs. Russell” was probably the first star match up in the sport with title implications.

I’m not saying that Russell wasn’t a great player. I’m saying he’s been incredibly overrated because of the number of championships won by the team he was on.

Yeah, because rebounding and defense aren't an important part of the game. It's all about gaudy scoring averages, right? Let me know when they name NBA Finals MVP Award after Rudy Gobert. Since he's never sniffed the NBA Finals, you may be waiting a while.
If Rudy Gobert played on a team with 5 other all-stars in a league of only 8 teams, he would have won a bunch of Finals too.

dude WTF are you talking about? you know you can look this stuff up, right?

Russell played in the All Star game from 58-69
in those years he played with three team mates in the All Star game ONE TIME, 1962

the Celtics All Stars from that era were usually G Sam Jones, F John Havlicek, and C Russell

an old Cousy, Heinsohn and an old Bailey Howell were mixed in at different times. Wilt had All Star team mates too.

So I will grant you Sam Jones and Hondo and Russell were stout but the guy who validates your point is Tommy Heinsohn?

The NBA expanded to 9 teams in 1961-62, 10 teams in 1966-67, 12 teams in 1967-68 and 14 teams in 1968-69

He may be but he’s also the biggest POS. Didn’t even speak to his kids by another woman until they turned 18. And they tried to contact him. He’s a huge jerk. Can’t stand that guy.

Not the best, but if LSU would have had Larry Wilson from Nichols and John Rudd from McNeese on their team, they would have been very hard to beat.

Born in West Monroe, moved to California at age 6. One high school teammate was Frank Robinson.

It’s Bill Russell then Russell then Russell if we are talking about best player just born in Louisiana. If you are having a conversation with someone and they say Bill Russell is overrated immediately quit talking basketball with this person.

My only isssue with Russell is, he was a Center that in no way shape or form would be a Center in today’s NBA. He might be the best born in Louisiana. He 100% deserves to be top 75 alltime and even top 10ish in NBA history. I just can’t put him in the Goat convo like a lot of people want to.

Nobody thinks Karl Malone is better than Shaq

Better human being? Of course not. Better basketball player, what metric are we using? 1 vs 1, Malone takes him to the mid range and rains jumpers all day. He can match Shaqs strength better than Shaq can venture out and defend. Couldnt hack a Shaq him to eliminate his advantage and Karls a much better passer. Point is, it's very much debatable. #s,without looking, are probably in Karl's favor. The human being doesn't apply when comparing the talents and successes of playing basketball. Shaqs biggest advantage on paper is championships and blocked shots. The rest, advantage Karl Malone. I'm sure there's some analytical bullshite that will say different but the eye test says Malone was a better basketball player. My eyes anyway.

Karl Malone’s off season weight and physical training regiments were things of legend.

Many NBA and NFL players would train with him…..all would wither away while Malone kept going.

Malone is the best current or former NBA player born in the state of Louisiana.

Heinsohn didn't suck. He was RoY the same year Russell broke in (although Russ missed part of the season playing in the Olympics).
