Something got popped here by the airport a few minutes ago. Hair stood up on my arms inside.
Now a tornado warning.

I think what we’ve seen in Houston tonight is a good example of why people should always pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings. Yes, there was a tornado warning, but much of the damage in the area is probably from 70+ mph straight line winds rather than from a tornado. Severe level straight line winds are nothing to scoff at.

There are about a billion lightning strikes in these storms today, so there's a good chance something got hit.

What’s the science behind the usual strong band of thunderstorms that roll through compared to what hit us Monday evening and Houston tonight? What I’m trying to say is what causes the abnormal 70ish mph winds?

Centerpoint must have rerouted around the downed transmission tower. Only 37600 out now and down to 177k out across Texas.
ETA - now it’s back to a million plus out.

With a MCS like this they're more of a threat than a tornado. Damage is spread over a much wider area. Driving during it is worse than a day when you have supercells with tornado potential. You can strategically avoid those. When a 10-20 mile wall of wind is closing in on you and you're on the interstate or a highway with trees there isn't much you can do.

KPLC weather said they dropped the tornado warning. Nothing on radar.
