Away team doesn’t score. They intentionally walk the 1st batter so it’s 1st & 2nd with no out.

Only one is needed to win.

Is the play always to bunt them over to 2nd and 3rd to set up a sac fly win?

Sure, they can intentionally walk again to set up another DP opportunity but a sac fly or the right ground out wins.

When I first started watching baseball in the 80's bunting was absolutely the play.

In this day of analytics, apparently it is not. And I don't get it. I'm too old-school to understand apparently

Yeah if u think that you have a better than 80% chance of pulling it off

Phillies had it 1st & 2nd in the bottom of the 10th with no out after an IW to Harper.

GIDP
Fly out
Inning over

Now they are down 6-4 in the 11th

I could see it being the play when you only need 1 run to win… most analytics are looking at best scenario to score the most runs they can in that inning

The gist of it is that hitting major league pitching is insanely hard to do, and you only get 3 outs per inning, so why give one away for free?

And sometimes the out you give up doesn’t even move the runners over

Why would they intentionally walk the first batter and purposely put the winning run in base?

And how does intentionally walking the FIRST batter put a runner in first and second?

The winning run is already on second… they want to set up the double play

Sac fly to RF will move the winning run. So depends if the guy who would be initially walked is the hitter you want at the plate.

Yes. That makes sense but you said they intentionally walk the FIRST BATTER

Gotta love the internet. It's where people who have no idea what they're talking about feel the need to give their opinion.

You do realize that the batting team starts extra innings with a runner already on 2nd, right?

Your logic is sound. But if you sac bunt, you cannot strike out. If you strike out, you essentially kill the inning. In modern day pro baseball, bullpen arms are strikeout pitchers. Strikeouts happen at a super high rate. So it is just a numbers game. 3 opportunities to get a hit.

How long have you been stoned?

Yes, he said intentionally walk the "FIRST BATTER". The already standing on second when the inning starts isn't the "first batter" He's the last batter from the last inning, numbnuts.
