Photo is a far shot but take a guess what you think. I’m thinking cotton but could be water. What says OB?

The body and pattern definitely look like a diamond-backed water snake but the upward tilt of the head suggests cottonmouth. If you see it swim away you will know for sure. If it swims off with the entire body above the surface of the water it is a cottonmouth. If it swims off under water or with only the head above water it is a water snake.

It is obviously a rare and elusive Touquini Legless Diamondback Lizard. Often mistaken for the common Diamondback Water Snake, they are differentiated by the fact that the Water snake is too proud to ever be found basking on man-made floating debris while the Touquini will often seek out such things as pool noodles, old ice chests, and dead bodies upon which to perch for much needed UV rays.

I will however, defer to anyone who might identify it as a Diamondback Water Snake, especially Tigerdad.

Kill em dead.

Last place I want to be is in the water if I see a snek. I cannot move near as fast and my insane quick reflexes are stymied.

Swimming on the surface or under only tells you if the snake has air in his lungs, not what kind he is.

Snakes swimming under water are even more freaky.

You needed to find a way to get closer. The Georgia dude with the YouTube channel gets right up next to all sorts of pit vipers.
