There's no better, just different. Personally, I'd pick SF, mainly because the food scene is far better than SD. From SF, Napa/Sonoma are just a hop away, as are lovely places like Monterrey, Sausalito, Muir Woods/Beach, etc. But I do agree that you should not be focused on kid activities for a 20 month old; that age kid will be happy with a generic playground in a park, anywhere. Pick the place you most want to visit.

SF has its share of urban problems, like any city its size. In case some folks aren't paying attention, the opiod crisis and petty crime are rampant in rural America these days. Chances are, there are spots in your own hometown where you'd step over needles and can find people sleeping in parks, under bridges, or in fields. Hell, DC is homeless vet central...

We have friends that live out there and my wife just got back 3 days ago from visiting them for 9 days. They went out in the city everyday including 4 late nights seeing bands at different venues. I asked her if she saw any poop, needles, aggressive bums, etc. She said she saw some homeless but no big deal. She didn't see any of the other stuff. Their car was broken into on Oakland when they went to see a band there but nothing was stolen.

Lived in San Diego for a long time and loved it. Prefer it over San Francisco but both are cool for their own reasons.

We used to go to Huntington Beach for weekend getaways some as well. Close to Disney etc. Weather is better in San Diego but San Francisco will be nice this time of year.

But seriously, how can you even think of taking your family to San Fran? Bums shite in the street and there are dirty needles everywhere. This is how you take care of your family?

Just because you're too poor to travel to San Francisco doesn't mean you have to shite on it. It's one of the best cities to visit in the world.

It blows away San Francisco.

Do you like living in Louisiana? I love how you freaks down in the bayou want to judge everywhere, when your state is the biggest dump in America.

I was surprised by my last visit. The city is looking more dirty and run down, and the homeless situation is astonishing.

Do you spend most of your time in Tenderloin and SoMa?

This is contained in, like, two neighborhoods. It's easy to avoid and visit other parts of San Francisco.

I love it. Have you ever been to Louisiana? If not, you shouldn't make a broad generalization like you did. If you have, I would love to hear exactly what freaks you encountered, and describe the dumps you've seen.

I've lived in Pennsylvania and California and I've been in the New Orleans area for over twenty years and except for San Diego, it's my favorite place. It has its share of issues no doubt but to me, it's a great place to live.

My other post was admittedly an exaggeration and clearly, you can go to San Francisco and have a great time without dealing with much crap.

That does not change the fact that the city has been trending downwards as far as the tourism experience goes. When you allow and tacitly encourage people to panhandle/live on the street, provide needles for them, and not try to control the issues that arise from those behaviors, then the quality of life is going to go down.

And who the hell lives in Montana anyway?

Absolutely. Why not? The difference is I have been to San Francisco numerous times over the years and have seen the downturn. So why can't I comment on it? Not just shite i pulled off of "Fox News."

If Mr. Montanan has been here and can talk about the freaks and dumps then so be it. I'll accept that.

Seems like the head of tourism and residents kid of agree.......

San Francisco's visitor's bureau head is begging city officials to clean up the streets, which are allegedly rampant with vagrants and unclean conditions. The president of SF Travel, Joe D'Alessandro, says he is greeted everyday by drug users openly shooting up o and their leftover paraphernalia, human excrement, homelessness, and more. 'The streets are filthy. There's trash everywhere. It's disgusting,' D'Alessandro told the San Francisco Chronicle. 'I've never seen any other city like this - the homelessness, dirty streets, drug use on the streets, smash-and-grabs.

quote:

Kevin Carroll, executive director of the Hotel Council, which represents 110 hotels, told the Chronicle: 'People say: "I love your city, I love your restaurants, but I'll never come back".'

quote:

D'Alessandro said he's heard complaints from convention organizers as well about the conditions of San Francisco streets to the pointing of not listing the city on their tour list. Organizations that hold events in the city, including the California Dental Association and the National Automobile Dealers Association, wrote a letter in 2015 to late mayor Ed Lee about the state of the streets, reported The Chronicle. The letter talked about gritty scenes on the streets of San Francisco including human feces and harassment by mentally ill people and drug users. It went on to say that if the situation didn't improve, 'your city will see that citywide conventions will not rebook San Francisco and will choose other cleaner and safer West Coast destinations.'

Over a period of years, San Francisco has earned a reputation for being one of the most tolerantly liberal cities in the United States. But now, residents there may have hit their limit for compassion after homeless tent camps, feces, and trash litter the streets and a new interim mayor has vowed to do something about it.

quote:

"The trash, our homeless, the needles, the drug abuse on our streets, I've seen it all in our city and it's gotten to the point where we need to really change course," Farrell said in an interview with the AP. "We've gone away from just being compassionate to enabling street behavior and that, in my opinion, is a shift that's unacceptable."

quote:

Farrell says the squalor seen on San Francisco's streets has gotten out of control and that residents should feel safe while using the city's sidewalks. One video shot by a San Francisco resident has been grabbing a lot of attention lately. Shannon Gafford documented his trip to work through one of the busiest BART stations in the Bay Area. In the video, you can see drug users blatantly shooting up out in the open, while commuters walk by, while others lay on the ground, slumped to one side.

How dirty is San Francisco? An NBC Bay Area Investigation reveals a dangerous mix of drug needles, garbage, and feces throughout downtown San Francisco. The Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of the city – the more than 20-mile stretch includes popular tourist spots like Union Square and major hotel chains. The area – bordered by Van Ness Avenue, Market Street, Post Street and Grant Avenue – is also home to City Hall, schools, playgrounds, and a police station.

quote:

Based on the findings of the Investigative Unit survey, Riley believes parts of the city may be even dirtier than slums in some developing countries. “The contamination is … much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India,” he said. He notes that in those countries, slum dwellings are often long-term homes for families and so there is an attempt to make the surroundings more livable. Homeless communities in San Francisco, however, are often kicked out from one part of town and forced to relocate to another. The result is extreme contamination, according to Riley.

quote:

“Unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable,” said Supervisor Hillary Ronen. “We're losing tourists. We're losing conventions in San Francisco. All of this is happening because we aren't addressing the root cause, which is we need more temporary beds for street homelessness.” Ronen believes San Francisco has been too focused on permanent housing for the homeless and that the city has neglected to provide enough temporary shelter, which can provide the homeless a respite from the streets. The city currently has about 2,000 temporary beds. Ronen, however, believes an additional 1,000 are needed, at a cost of about $25 million.

The head of tourism in any big city would say the same thing. Homeless people in any city tend to gravitate to the tourist areas as the tourists are not as jaded as the locals and more likely to give money.

I've got friends who live there, have been to see them and yes, the city is degrading.

It's still a great place to visit but I'd take San Diego 10/10 times
