Oh yes, I will always give myself a "life got in the way" or "I'm not feeling 100%" days here and there. Like this week was already going to be a cut back week for me and this morning I woke up with aches and a completely stopped up head... my runs this week are going to be modified. (Also my average Monday stress score on Garmin is 19, today it has been 39, I do not want to push myself and end up injured, my goals will be down to a 0% if I end up injured)

Tomorrow should be my workout, I might not even run after I take stock of my health in the morning.

Yea it’s definitely better to have that mindset instead of forcing yourself to go 24/7. I fought myself with that a lot getting back into it and feel like I enjoy it more when it doesn’t feel like a job.

Ended up making my run today a baby tempo. 50 minutes 6:27 avg. Had 4 miles under 6:10

Anyone have any experience using the pace planning feature on garmin connect? Just got a forerunner 55 and was fooling around with it. Actually liked the plan it spit out for me for okc.

I’ve messed with it a little but never actually used it in a race. Probably nice to have an audible or tactile heads-up when you’re too fast or slow, but also the pace measurements aren’t always accurate especially in a race setting.

Knocked out 4 this morning to begin my half taper…of course I get my second cold in a month to sweeten the deal. Feel like arse today, going to rest and hope I can rally by Sunday.

You doing the Big Beach? I have a few friends doing it as well, I've heard it's a great race.

That's why I am not pushing myself for a PR in the Half I'm doing in a week and a half, with a 1 year old and 5 year old at home, January pretty much means I'm sick 31 days in a row leading up to the race. I want to support the event (it's like 5 miles from my house) but I will not put up anything to write home about with my finish time

Also: Good Luck to you! 5 days to heal from a cold should be plenty of time, just rest and drink lots of fluids, luckily you will expectorant all the snot from your body in the first 4 miles of the race and be golden for the last 15k

Yep, second year in a row doing Big Beach. It’s a well produced race, though I admit it’s a bit boring with very little crowd support.

We keep our girls with a nanny during the day, so someone brought the cold in the house and it wasn’t me or my wife. Brutal timing but as long as it stays neck up, I should be good. Spent almost $100 on meds yesterday. Basically bought everything possible to ease symptoms and recover quicker

Crescent City Classic poster design is released. Another Becky Fos painting, matches the one from a couple of years ago.

Need some taper advice. My half marathon is this Sunday, I came down with a cold on Monday but feeling like I can get out for a run tomorrow morning. Think it’s more important that I get the run in before my race or more important to be as rested as possible coming off of a cold? I’m leaning toward the latter but only having one 4 mile run before my race is stressing me out.

Rest is more important the week before a race. Try to get more sleep.

This - just a reminder:

You don't get stronger from running, you get stronger while you are resting and your body makes and attempt to "never have that happen again"

If you are sick and compromised, just rest, you need your body to be the best it can be on race day

Thanks for the input. Opted to take it easy again today. Might do a short low impact ride on the peloton tomorrow morning if I keep feeling better.

About to go for my first run since Sunday... hopefully I don't completely fall apart or cause any damage to my lungs

ETA: just realized I never said it on here... ended up I had covid last weekend and ran 18 miles in single digits while my body was trying to fight it. Basically my doctor (who is a runner) said I needed to cut back a lot this week and probably not run for most of it. Said he was scared I might have caused some temporary damage to the lungs and didn't want anything long lasting to flare up

I suspect my cold might be Covid but I haven’t had any respiratory issues, just a very light shallow cough. So who know. Hope your run goes well and your lungs recouped!

oh shite. im guessing youve started recovering good?

im keeping as much space as possible from my students right now becuase of this. between the new baby and being in a good spot with training right now the last thing I feel like dealing with is flu/rona.

7 miles, 8:53 pace, felt ok at points but I felt VERY dragged down and when I stopped to get a breather (3 times) I was gagging pretty good and doing some violent coughs. The final stop I ended up sitting at my car and almost lost my lunch (for reference I've never thrown up after a run) ... so it was interesting, but all my muscles and joints feel great, just going to take a second for my lungs to recover from this crap. (and apparently my heart as well even though my average HR wasn't all that horrible, it was probably about 6-7 points higher than it should have been at this pace)

Assuming you had a bad cough with the Covid?

Honestly I didn't really start coughing until the end and it all started coming up. Hips are sore today but that's probably from the concert I went to last night instead of the run.

Going to take a few more days of recovery, yesterday's run was just not where I wanted it
