depends on what you value.

hue hub - ROCK SOLID and can also pair other zigbee bulbs (such as the cheap IKEA candelebra smart bulbs that are like $5 ea)

hue apps - huge supported ecosystem by google, alexa, wink, smartthings, IFTTT and stringify

you may find a 'cheaper' smart color bulb but you wont be able to do what you can do with hue.

Not really. Nobody else has the functionality of the entire ecosystem that Hue does. Also, Philips' LED technology is ahead of pretty much everyone else. Hue will produce deeper, richer colors than competitors, particularly in the blue/green range.

Yeah, other brands ARE cheaper, but I warn you that they're worth every penny.

Yeah, but they're not really cheaper than Hue and the pointI was trying to make was that cheaper bulbs aren't a bargain. The Lifx bulbs are really good bulbs and probably better than Hue's, but I like Hue's ecosystem better.

I got that. They are the same pricing structure

Much better as far as brightness and colors. I personally like the app a lot better

To each his own. Hue has a few different options(non screw in bulbs) more than lifx which are cool. Hue works with some other systems better since it has its own hub vs wifi. My wireless network can handle it and I have a dedicated 2.4 channel just for mine. I am down to one hue product. I had a bunch but their connectivity just did not work well in my house for some reason and I liked the Lifx bulbs better, especially their mini color

Yes, but many of the other accessories are damn expensive. I love what you can do with the lights. I downloaded an app called IFTTT and my lights will start to flash if it starts raining, or when one of my team is about to start playing in the team's color.

hue = PHILIPS INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION = zigbee = local control = local connection = hub responds instantly to app on your phone to adjust lights.

lifx = Australian startup = wifi = you have to route your command from the app.. to the internet (time passes) to the lifx cloud to interpret your command, back from the lifx cloud to the internet, back in to your router which then looks up the IP address of the device and then sends it the command. throw alexa into the mix and you get to add the time it takes to travel to alexa first to interpret what you're requesting before it can begin its journey to the LIFX mothership website and it also has to send a message back to Alexa so she can say "OK".

god help you if there's an internet hiccup or lifx's cloud is down for maintenance....or they go bankrupt and choose to no longer pay AWS for computing power to route commands to their lightbulbs leaving them stuck in whatever the last color was before they shuttered their website.

which do you think is a better long-term lightbulb investment?

Check out this price on Walmart's website...looks there is a glitch in their online system or I'm completely missing something??

That looks like some sort of error... but it is a third-party seller ("TechRabbit")... but we'll see. I just ordered one via PayPal Credit so if they send me the wrong thing they'll have to give my money back.

I have just 2 Sengled lights w their hub controlled via Echo in my bedroom named Light and Light1. If I start replacing bulbs throughout the rest of the house do I have t give each one a unique name (which would be a problem to remember so many light names) or can I call them all "light" and control them by whatever Echo I have in that room. ( I have 5 Alexa devices now throughout the house).

Basically my question is how to manage many smart bulb without turning on the entire house when I say "light on"?

ETA: Maybe just name the each bulb by room/light? Den Light, Kitchen light , Bedroom light etc..?

I had both. I had a lot of hues. They didn’t work for me, they work for others. The Lifx are instaneous through the app, never an issue with google, smart things, or hubitat. Although hubitat has a community generated patch, they still work great on my automations and motion sensors and incredibly faster than smart things in either bulb brand.

I have had to warranty one of them though it was pretty much doa. Only other issue I have had is my daughter plays with light switches and resets a bulb or fixture occasionally. They sent a new one no questions asked, two day air because we were having people over.

I did have lots of connectivity issues with hue in my house. I also had a hub go bad after two weeks or at least support had me switch it out. I really like the ambient lights that hue has and kept the battery op one for our patio table.

The Lifx bulbs are brighter and more vivid. The mini bulb they sell is fairly comparable to the hues top one, but colors are better, can be found cheaper when there are sales, and are normal bulb shape and sized. A lot of my fixtures had tight tolerances and required the incandescent bulb shape.

Like I said they each have their benefits. Hue has candelabra bulbs, Lifx has outdoor color and so on. They are each on their third gens, so it’s not like they are some new startup. They have been around a bit for the market place.

ETA, you can control LIFX locally without their cloud and they reset to white so color sticking isn’t an issue

I don’t have echo but unique names and rooms help. But don’t get too wordy either and be careful of similar sounding words.

I just bought 8 - 4 packs. Thanks. Tech Rabbit is solid. That’s who I bought my last ones from. That price is remarkable. I’m pretty sure I spent $24 per bulb for refurbished ones last time.

I hope so. I’ll be up to 68 bulbs. Going to take me a while to get these set up.

You will need a 2nd hub with 68 bulbs. The 2nd Gen hub really only supports 50 bulbs but you can squeeze it out to around 58-62 depending on rules you have setup.

I have 2 extra hubs (it was cheaper at some point to buy the kits with a hub then to buy 4 individual bulbs) if anyone needs just a hub.

Thanks for the info. I’ll have about 12 hubs after I get these 8. Is there anything different I need to do with running multiple hubs? Will they talk to each other and the interface will be the same?
