Hiking in the Andes in Ecuador on the last day of a group tour. Very high elevation. With a guide and cool guy who was in his late 70's with a history of heart trouble. Not a good idea for him to be there but he chose to live life rather than live safely. Cold and drizzly, we decided to turn back at the next bend. Five seconds later he gasped, his eyes rolled to the sky, and he fell back and whacked his head hard on the trail. The guide did CPR for 20 minutes - no go. Ugly day all around.

One guy had a heart attack in a tool trailer. No luck bringing him back. A motorcycle wreck on I-10 in front of me coming back from Christmas in the oaks. My grandmother by her bedside at 13 years old. A body in the Mississippi at work. Also fishing in grand isle had a 13 year old float up while surf fishing on 4th of July. Nothing as eye opening as having a gun pointed in your face two separate times.

Guy committed suicide with my train at 60mph. Just stepped between the rails, turned away and bent over. I only had time to shut off the throttle.

Can still smell the smell.

Dumbass conductor wasn't careful what he touched getting off and back on the locomotive so had blood on his gloves that he managed to get on his paperwork. The recrew conductor was rather disgusted with that.

Local FD wouldn't come out to hose off the locomotives. Said it wasn't their job so it went through to the next terminal where the railroad had a hazmat crew come out to clean it up. There was actually more blood and guts on the second locomotive as the guy balled up under the train.

eta-I got the standard three paid trips off.

When I was a kid, I went on a week long trip with my grandparents to Ft. Walton beach. As we were leaving the metro area going Eastbound, there had just been an accident going Westbound where the driver had been ejected through the windshield... I'm talking, about a minute before we passed the man, since right after we passed him we saw EMS and state police rushing to the scene. Found out through the Times-Pic later he died instantly on impact, wasn't wearing his seatbelt. I still picture that windshield from time to time to this day. Horrible thing for an 8 year old to see.

There was "Ballpark Frank" (as my friend's dad, a now-retired cop, had dubbed him) an unfortunate man who was left on the side of the road to plump in rot in the city after Katrina. I blocked a lot of detail out of my mind, like where it was or really anything else from that day. But the body itself is still clear.

Other than that... was there bedside when my grandpa died. And I've been to many funerals.

It was a bad day.
But the weeks that followed were worse. I don’t know how many we drug out but, I’ll never, ever forget...

Last September I performed CPR on my brother-in-law until paramedics arrived. He had already passed when they showed, though they spent a long time trying to revive him. I still get a little uneasy when I see an ambulance with it's siren and lights on.

Last Sunday on our jog we came across a homeless man who had just been stabbed. He survived, but as I was applying pressure to his wounds, I was certain he was going to bleed out. All I could think was "I'm not mentally prepared to watch another person die. You can't die right now."

I went in the room with my 56 year old Father(31 years ago)before his respirator was removed.

I'll never forget it.He was jerking like crazy from seizures.

Yep. My dad passed right before I got to his hospital room.
Same with my mom decades later.

Also my wife's sister had that happen with a babygirl that was still born.

I'm not sure which is worse; seeing a still born baby at full term or having your parents die.

Both will frick you up.

Live in Dallas, was commuting up to a project in Plano. Was driving on 75 one morning and a dude tried to cross the highway when it was still dark. He got splattered probably no more than 30 seconds before i got there. I was in my jeep at the time with no doors or top on, so i got the smell as well. Been around a lot of dead animals, dead human had a much different smell that I never want to smell again.

only once outside of funerals.

saw the guy who got hit by a car on airline in front of the flee market. got hit at night and was still there in the morning. even though there wasn't much damage visible from the road, it was a sickening feeling.

Yep, next door neighbor of my parents. I had dropped by to visit and his wife came running in saying that he had fallen in his garden and wouldn't answer. I was the first there and he was already gone. Really nice friendly guy and engineer at a refinery before retirement. He and his wife were the first Republicans I had ever met.

I was at the gym on a Friday night and this old man on a treadmill had a massive heart attack. A fireman, who was also in the gym working out, gave cpr till the paramedics arrived. I left but found out later, the gentleman didn’t make it

I watched my dad dying. 1 week at MD Anderson and then about 1 week at his apartment. 0/10 would not recommend.

Watched my mother die in the hospital. She was on a respirator due to Alzheimer's. Was sad to watch but she went peacefully. 89 years old.
