What's the best?? I'll be there in a few days. I've been to Memphis many times but it's been awhile. Is the Rendezvous still good?

is that the vinegar based instead of sweet sauce version?

Don't go there.
Central BBQ, The Bar-b-q Shop, Corky's, Memphis BBQ Company, The Germantown Commissary and One and Only are ALL far better than the Rendezvous.
Where will you be staying?

It'll be dinner. Anywhere near the airport or along I55. I'm willing to venture out. I'm not too familiar with Memphis.

Memphis BBQ Company Right off 55 in Horn Lake Really Good BBQ
Central BBQ - on Central kind of near the airport... GREAT BBQ
If you want to venture out (I would) Germantown Commissary (The Germantown one, NOT and I repeat NOT the Collierville one) in Germantown AWESOME BBQ... and make sure to get a piece of Lemon Icebox Pie.
I'd rank them Germantown Commissary.... Central.... Memphis BBQ

All worthy recommendations. I was always partial to the Three Way myself.
What is your opinion of Neely's? I always thought it to be merely average?

Cozy Corner. It's in midtown though. Bologna sandwich and the wings are the highlights.

What do you guys rate Topps Bbq? I stopped at the one in Southaven only because interstate was closed. And yes it was very good.

I’ve enjoyed Paynes BBQ. The pork sandwich with coleslaw is very good. It’s a mustard sauce if you like that.

Second the recommendation on Cozy Corner. Also, their BBQ Cornish Game hens are on point. As for Tops, (and I've only been to their Union Ave place) their cheeseburger is the star there.

I forgot that one... and I work right down the street from it.
Good recommendation, though.

Barbecue is decent, Cheeseburger is great... ribs are... surprisingly good. French Fries are good as well.

In general I think Memphis bbq is overrated. But Payne’s and Cozy Corner are excellent. Not fancy but good. Avoid the Rendezvous

BB King’s on Beale Street

Since June of this year...
Ate at Rendezvous downtown. Was alright, but not spectacular. Would not go back unless someone else was paying
Ate at the Central BBQ location just across the state line in Southaven. Garbage. Complete waste of money. I sure hope the Memphis locations are nothing like that one.
Ate at Cozy Corner BBQ on North Parkway in Memphis. Best BBQ I've ever had in my life. I don't pass thru Memphis now without making a stop there.

I don't really consider Rendezvous as BBQ, but I still think it is a must go place.

Central is pretty good.
Rendezvous SUCKS THE BIG ONE. Some of the worst ribs I've had in years. Their sauce is good though, grab some at the airport.

Rendezvous gets all the media love, and trades heavily in tourist traffic. It's not 'true' barbecue, as the ribs are grilled for an hour, not smoked as traditional BBQ is. Their dry rib 'rub' leans heavily on paparika, from their Greek origins. I'm not hating on them, as I've been there many times. Rather, its the vibe, the alley/basement location, the personality of the wait staff - the total experience that keeps them rolling through the years. This is probably why they have not expanded to other locations as others have done. And kudos to them for maintaining that culture and making it thrive. If you go - get the sausage and cheese plate. It's a great pick!

This I can deal with. Love greek spice mixes. Cavendars and similar, and started making my own homemade.
Put it on everythign but my toothpaste.

I drove to Paynes once around lunchtime and felt like I was driving through an episode of “the walking dead.” That’s a rough stretch.
