Are we going to have to go through this again next year at DT?

Hopefully McKinley will be hitting his stride, but who else? Will Breaux be ready? Will Washington ever amount to anything?

Thanks.

It’s such a position of need that DTs are gonna command top NIL deals moving forward. And the top rated DTs especially. It’s weird because LSU has always had Dlinemen growing on trees it seems and now we have 2 Heisman qbs in 5 yrs with no top DT ready to go this season. Hopefully D McKinley will be the stud he is projected to be, but that is probably not going to happen as a true freshman at that position.

The answer is very obviously no. Breaux will never be a contributor in the SEC.

Until we start paying guys, we will forever get run over by NIL. Our defense is not shaping up very well for the future and that’s on bad recruiting on that side of the ball. That has to change.

Recruiting is not an issue here … it’s flat out buying (or not buying) players. Recruiters are not at a premium in the age of the portal.

Problem is if McKinley does live up, will we pay to keep him? How much is too much for us? Our inability to buy Wingo out of the draft is looking more telling. How out of touch/stubborn are we?

You’re losing Páez, Lee and Guillory so, yes, you will need at least 2 more rotational DTs to sub with McKinley and Johnson who will be sophomores by then. It would be smart to bring in some DTs this season that have more than one year of eligibility.

Of course they are. If two schools are offering something similar, it’s going to come down to the coaches who know how to recruit better.

This has been a problem on the horizon for 2 years and wasn’t addressed until the 24 class. Normally freshmen DL don’t really contribute in their first year, add in the seniors leaving next year, the 25 class once signed being 2 years away from being counted on. Kelly is going to have to pay for the DL at some point. Ideally the first portal window when there are more options.

Maybe the new coaching staff can identify some players leftover, but man at what point does the talent that left via the portal become better than what you’re bringing in?

We will need 2 portal DTs next year again even if we hit on the 2024 and 2025 classes. Freshmen aren't typically SEC contributors at OL and DT.

I hope we don't go through this next year or any year, mostly because if I see another new thread with the abbreviation dt in it I'll probably be burnt out on recruiting forever

We lost 4 defensive linemen to the portal before Davis got here, so some of this was self inflicted by not choosing to fight to keep at least two.

2. What makes you even say that?

There is this thing called coaching. Your question will be answered between September and December. My bet is what we already have will be "coached up".
