I know he's willingly retiring, but did he get any pressure to "go ahead" and do it?

What's the thought on this?

I haven't heard anything that indicates either way.

What would be the motivation for them possibly doing this?

He has become slightly more negative in his older years, combined with his slip ups getting more and more noticeable in baseball.

Just a thought

His daughter told me about a year ago, that Jim was planning to possible retire 5 years ago. I don't think he was or is being forced out.

I don't think that's the case. Just my opinion. He's getting a little older and likely just wants to spend time with family. That's what most people want to do when they get his age. Maybe he just wants to sit down and watch a sporting event in peace with out having to commentate on it. It's been years since he could just sit back and enjoy a game.

Maybe the ability to decipher the difference in a homerun and a pop up to the 2nd sacker.

The first step to ensure that would be to have the audio stream through Geaux Zone be better than 16 Kbps.

Now he doesn't have to bitch about baseball going extra innings or lightning delays in football

I think Hawthorne would have been better off had he reduced the workload, the travel does become difficult and baseball is probably the most difficult to handle.

I don't think he was forced out.

That would help, as well...

It's always good to leave while you're on top.

Sounds logical to me. I'll miss him, and it will take me a while to "warm" to a new Voice of the Tigers. Without a doubt, there will be some of us who will criticize the new guy, and some who will think he's great. I just know I'll miss Jim's distinctive voice, though I hope I will like his replacement, as well.

Man, what memories Hawthorne has stored away! a pretty rich life, if you ask me.
