Montgomery is a much better left handed hitter than right handed hitter so it was actually smart.

not sure who you are referring to, but you absolutely want to force montgomery to bat right handed there. he is a much better hitter from the left side. these are exaggerated numbers but he has something like 20 homers from the left side to like 5 from the right side.
i'm not sure why anyone would question that decision. i think most of us expected a lefty coming in to face montgomery.
