Jake Elliott hit a 55-yard FG (still the longest make in NCAA OT history) in the 2014 Miami Beach Bowl that would have been good from 80 yards.

They actively don't want that. It's the whole reason they changed kickoff and touchback rules in the first place.

agreed. they were trying to specifically reward both teams for not having a full speed collision.

i hate it. i don't want injuries, but kickoffs are a great equalizer and they've done everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen any more.

And people wonder why Cole Tracy never got a shot in the NFL maxing out at 53 yards. I think I agree this is even more impressive than Tucker’s.

Greatest kick in history was Vinatieri vs the Raiders on 2001 playoffs. 45 yds in a blizzard and swirling wind to get it to OT.

Meh it’s still 1 of 16 or 17 games, and who really expects to make one that long?

Give me one a bit shorter that most NFL kickers should make but with careers and legacies on the line in the playoffs…

It was a great kick and arguably the GOAT given the conditions and that it helped launch a dynasty. Also his GW kicks in SBs against the Rams and Panthers. Dude is legend.

It just dawned on me that the poor Loins were victims of both the Dempsey and Tucker kicks.

Butker made a 54 yarder last year after getting carted off with an ankle sprain that forced him to miss the next four games.

LINK

I would still go with Tom Dempsey’s 63 yarder with half a foot. Sever yards longer than the previous longest ever.

I should look that up. College ball is easier to kick far from my personal experience (decent HS kicker) and the KNFL balls are meant to make it more difficult still.

Kicking far is like throwing hard or running fast. There's no rhyme or reason to why 5'5" Blake Gruppe can kick as far as Sebastian Janikowski just like there's no real reason why Tim Lincecum could throw harder than Albert Pujols. I was accurate but couldn't really kick further than 45 yards with HS ball in practice. Longest make in a game was only 39

If Goodell could get rid of linemen and just make the game 7 on 7 tourneys, he would.

SirWinston ?? Almost every kicker in the NFL can kick it 75 yards off a tee..

The post is taking about a holder, not a tee. The holders are triangle contraptions that keep the ball upright. They only touch the top tip of the ball. Kickers use them in practice, warmups and while kicking into a net.

Should've been 71 yards and no good if the offinals were doing their job.

Can you show your math? I'm coming up with 70.83. Thanks.

I have no idea of the mathematical calculations, but the net looks roughly 6 yards behind the goalposts from that overhead shot I posted in the OP.

Then you add the height of where the call crossed the goal posts (another 5 yards or so above the post) and the force / pace at which it hit the net (still had decent locomotion behind it, unlike Tucker's or Dempsey's kicks, which were both falling at a pace exceeding the propulsion as they met the plane of the crossbar) and I wound up pulling 70.8 out of me arse. I actually suspect if you account for the wind, the exact same kick may have been good from ~73 or 74 if it were indoors on flubber. This is why I'm arguing it might be the most impressive FG in NFL history in some respects.

I may not be remembering this correctly, but I thought they changed the auto placement of the ball because of the high injury rate on both sides trying to run the ball out. ?

Before Vinateri, there was Pat Summerall. The Giants trailed the Browns by a game in the standings and needed to win this game to force a tiebreaker game the next week. If Summerall doesn't make this field goal, the 1958 NFL Championship would have been Colts/Browns instead of Colts/Giants. Also, in 1958, kickers were still kicking straight instead of soccer style. This is an absolutely incredible kick.

Summerall's 49 yard FG in the snow (skip to the 5:00 mark of this video)
