I read the book about 25 years ago, and while I thought that it was just an OK novel, I can see it making a pretty good mini=series, as long as it's well done. The main characters in the book go through some pretty big transitions, so that bodes well for a six part series.
But, I fully expect Wokeism to ruin the series.

Same here for the most part. I do remember one of the chapters with the kid working in the freezer unit of a Croker warehouse was completely amazing and riveting.

If they try to make any of the characters sympathetic (i.e. McCoy in the Bonfire of the Vanities movie), this will fail. Unfortunately it also looks like it'll be set in present-day Atlanta and not late-90s Atlanta, which means no Freaknik scene.

I thought that Conrad character in the book was fairly sympathetic. Young guy unjustly prisoned...learns of Stoic philosophy in prison, etc. But you are probably right about the Freaknik scene. If I remember, this was the arrogant Ga. Tech football player who raped the rich white girl.(?)

Good point on Conrad. And yes, the Tech player was involved (though it was later found that the sex was consensual and the rich white girl instigated it).
Personally, I loved how Tom Wolfe managed to make Tech look like a football powerhouse by poaching the new coach from Bama.

It was not all that great. They just totally left out the football player rape Rich white girl plotline.
Should have gotten someone other than Regina King to develop this one.

Just finished the series and also read the book.
Look, I understand that any movie based on a book will change or leave some things out. I am even prepared for some Wokeness. But the series was ridiculous...Conrad went from a white guy in California who escapes from prison, studies and adapts Stoic philosophy, reinvents himself and ends up working for than mentoring the main character in the book - Charlie Crocker.
Now Conrad is black and he is freed from jail after his charges are dismissed...end of story. And every white male in the movie is either weak, racist or an a-hole. The ending was made-up and had nothing to do with the book.

They did not explain any of the characters at all. They just jump right in and I guess assume you read the book. If you haven’t read the book, you really have no idea what is behind all the characters.
Why was Crocker called the 60-min man? Who knows.
Peepgrass was Crocker’s banker. Crocker was $800MM in debt. Peep should have made millions and millions on those bank deals. Why was he living in a cruddy apartment and not able to pay off baby momma? Who knows?
The other guy running for Mayor, where is he at? What’s his deal and story? Who knows?

Agree with this. I had no idea there was a book associated. Just watched because it was in the top-10 on Netflix, had Jeff Daniels, and was looking for a drama.
I watched the whole thing and left with the same questions as you. Peepgrass was sitting in board meetings but was living like a mailroom guy? The different storylines were held together by the thinnest of threads. Oh well, at least Diane Lane is still hot.

Enjoyed the novel back in the day but pretty bored by the first episode of the series. I don't think I'll end up watching the rest.

Watched the first two episodes. Very meh. Jeff Daniels’ accent is pretty bad. Certainly had a place in the Hall of fame of bad southern accents.
