Bad experience at ATV store today

So I bought my son a Can Am 70 to ride around our camp. It was used and hasn’t ran “good” in a year or so.
Today, I went to my local motor sports shop and they had some Kayo 80s (I think). After looking for a salesman for a while, I finally found some help and was told they were $975. I figured that isn’t much more than the Can Am’s repair bill will be, so I told him I would take one.
We headed to the salesman’s desk and were making small talk while he wrote up the paperwork and he made me suspicious when he started mentioning fees. He took the paperwork to the back and returned to close the deal. AFTER REMOVING SOME OF THEIR FEES, the final price was $2795. When I asked to see the itemized list of add-ons, he explained that the MSRP is actually $1200 (his mistake) and that part of it was tax. I informed him that 10% tax on $1K is $100. Then he asked “where do you want to be on this?” I said closer to $1K than $3K and he said he would see what he could do. When he returned, the price had been trimmed to $1799.
I told the salesman that I could buy one of those from Marketplace for $800, and that I probably would never return to this shop.
Is this pretty standard operating procedure for these places?

I tried to buy a lawn mower from a “dealer” last year. They added over $400 in fees and requested that I pay for the $300 mulching kit up front prior to them ordering the kit. I left and bought the same Bad Boy mower at Tractor Supply and saved about $500.
It will only be normal if people continue to pay it.

Would have probably been a place on the receipt for you to tip if you would have bought it too

You got a dishonest salesman for sure. Hard to say if the whole outfit is like that without dealings with them.

I don't have the screw you gene many of these people possess. Cant imagine having the guts to quote $975 and coming back to the table asking for another $1800.

Problem is so many uneducated people go in and pay what theyre told that it emboldens this behavior.

He has a family to feed and is still paying for the lift kit, rims, tires, and truck nuts he financed on a short 4-year term. Have some mercy.
25% is the proper tip at ATV dealerships for the uninformed.

Were you financing a $975 purchase???
The sticker price is the price, pay cash and leave with the thing.

No…cash.
That’s what’s so perplexing.

I would have laughed and walked out. Doesn’t matter what they are selling, to give you a price and come back 300% more at the time of payment is laughably absurd.
I could see an apology on the miss quote and after tax it being $1400, still a significant increase but within reason.
ETA: I’m 100% all for supporting local business but that business has to be worth supporting. If they are shady or have poor customer service that’s 100% on them.
