I'm needing suggestions for a neurologist that specializes in dementia or memory loss. Obviously, I'm not positive what is causing my 76 yr old father, but his short term memory is getting worse. I'd like to go to a Dr that specializes. It's tough watching your father go through this. Thanks.

Dr. Gerald Calegan may be your best shot. He is at Perkins Rowe. But as was said, not a lot to do. Out of all the neurologists I saw with my kids, he was the best. A lot of them really suck and do nothing. He has had some success in other areas of treatment that most don't try. Good luck.

unfortunately, you can probably find some methods to help you cope and deal (like programming a GPS for his car) and switching out gas appliances, etc., but there's probably not much that can be done.

If you go to a doctor complaining of dementia like symptoms, he'll get a dementia/Alzheimer's type diagnosis. The doctor may give you hope, but it's false hope for most.

I’ve often wondered if the drug which was developed for Narcolepsy which has shown an increase cognitive ability (Modafinil) would provide benefits to folks experiencing a cognitive decline.

Might not be a cure but from what I’ve read it’s largely harmless. It may extend the “good times” for a little longer.

If it’s not full blown look in to ketone and ketone body effects on dementia.

This is not a substitute for medical help, but can be an effective adjunct dealing with this.

I’d try hyperbaric treatment, increased and legit pressurized treatment from the best in the business or at least one of the original docs that did R&D along time ago. Dr. Harch office # (504) 309-4948. They treat or have treated LSU, Saints, military war vets, boxers, fighters etc… and I believe they have some data on the effects that your Dad is experiencing. Not sure if this helps, but could be a legit rabbit hole for you to explore. I know they have a location on the Westbank, maybe Nola as well, but if that is too far, ask them for a reference in your area. Tell them the cousin of “Phil Tranchina” sent you (Doc will remember him for sure). My cousin helped him early on in his research b/c my cuz in the medical field and they worked together back in the day and is mentioned in his book on hyperbarics.

Don’t let someone with their own chamber tell you to just do a regular chamber in a spa, gym or house. The pressure & brain scans that Doc uses will tell him how to treat your Dad and it’s very precise. Some illnesses require more or less pressure in the chamber versus others.

But this stuff is miracle type of technology and isn’t discussed as much as it should be.

And even if you can’t afford or can’t logistically go to Dr. Harch, see if anyone nearby does the same type of treatment, more clinics these days are catching on. And if you can’t do that & can do a generic chamber, I’m sure the pure oxygen will help his brain health, but not nearly as much.

I got treatment there for past concussions & it helped. But while I was there, there was a little girl about 3 years old & her Mom would go in the capsule with her, and we would basically be on the same schedule every day. One day about 30 days into it or maybe less, the parents were all excited and talking with Doc and everyone was ecstatic. The joy was so evident I had to ask if they would share with me.
Summary: young couple, only one Child & they were from California & traveled to Nola to see Dr. HARCH.

the 3 yo girl was blind, couldn’t trace anything.
Mom had some sort of STD that can cause a baby to be blind down the road, if the Mom does vaginal birth. Apparently she did & the baby was blind. So they were staying at true Hilton Riverside on Poydras and every day they would bring the little girl to the aquarium being right next door to the Hilton downtown.

For weeks, the girl didn’t follow any of the super bright yellow, blue & orange fish, then getting deeper into treatment, suddenly one day at the aquarium, the little girls eyes started tracing the fish with her eyes. Eventually she was getting her eyesight, true miracle type of technology and research.

To this day, I get goosebumps talking about it, but if you look into this, and do it clinically and with a Doc that knows what they are doing, this could help your Dad.

Good luck & Prayers to ya!

Maybe try Bacopa, Alpha GPC, and a Keto diet along with going to the doctor

My mom, MiL and FiL had dementia. There's nothing that can stop it and not much that can slow it What you will start to learn is how you and your siblings will have to do to deal with it.

It seems to affect everyone differently. In my MiL's case, it came on pretty rabidly. For my mom, it was a long, slow process. You will have to start taking care of more and more stuff.

The worst part is that they are there physically, but they aren't there mentally, like something has taken over their body.

If he is not epileptic, have him listen to 40hz Gamma frequency for 15 minutes every other day.

One thing to be very aware of, in the mid to later stages, is him getting up & out of the house at night. Sleep walking but not really. My mother in law was often found walking around the yard in the middle of the night. She lived far enough from a road to where that was not really a concern, i.e. her walking into traffic. Just be very very very patient.

If it seems like a sudden onset of symptoms for someone who was doing fine recently, rule out delirium. Is he sleep deprived? I have seen the "expert" head of neurology and the lauded Oschsner Hospital diagnose someone as having dementia when all they needed was a week of decent sleep.

Whoever you guys see, get a second opinion. Just had a close family member go through the testing about a year ago(not sure where). They tested positive for dementia. Went to another doctor for a second opinion about 6 months ago and tested NEGATIVE. The second opinion did some more testing and contributed his conditions to depression.. Hope the best for you!

Heard about this the other day on a podcast. Clinical Trial: Silicon-rich mineral water as a non-invasive test of the 'aluminum hypothesis' in Alzheimer's disease
Not sure what else is out there on this topic or if chemist Christopher Exley is even credible, but I know if it were my parent I'd at least want to read up on it and ask a doctor about it. The podcast host mentioned that she started/will start drinking silicic acid-rich water, so it sounded like something anyone can access.

Aluminum Should Now Be Considered a Primary Etiological Factor in Alzheimer's Disease.

Regular consumption of a silicic acid-rich water prevents aluminium-induced alterations of nitrergic neurons in mouse brain: histochemical and immunohistochemical studies.
