I bought some cow oaks in one gallon pots. I don’t plan on planting them until next fall. I was thinking of transplanting them to 3 gallon pots now. My questions, is that a good idea (trees will be disturbed twice), should I fertilize them when I re-pot them?

Why not go ahead and plant them now?

Won’t hurt to plant twice, but if you plant them now, in 5 years, the ones you plant now will be bigger and healthier than ones you wait to plant.

Don't want to hijack this thread but I have to ask if anyone knows what species of oak is grown in Iran that produces acorns that appear to be about 3/4" to 7/8" in diameter and 2" to 3" or more long .
I saw them being handled and dried in this video.

I have a couple Swamp Chestnut Oaks on the way along with Nutall and Shumard.
I think you will be fine transplanting to a bigger pot and waiting till fall.

If you do it right should be fine.
Great tree to plant - grow big and have nice canopy shapes, wildlife hammer the acorns
And the acorns are human consumable

That's what I found also, but they supposedly don't get near this large.

You can transplant to bigger pot. The bigger pot will allow much more root expansion, which leads to more above-dirt growth.

Then plant in ground in winter.

Most oaks are fairly receptive to transplanting if you do it the right way.
