Serial # X79464

My quick research says 1953.
It’s in slightly below average shape, but is 70 years old. Has a special steel barrel. Says 1953’s are sweet 16s but aren’t stamped sweet 16.

$550

Tell me why I shouldn’t drive back and buy it right now

Edit: have learned it’s not an unstamped sweet, that was only 1947. It is a 1953 A5. I’ve been wanting a 16ga for upland and wood ducks though. If it’s there Wednesday I’ll probably get it.

I’m assuming it’s probably not in the best shape at that price. I’m assuming it didn’t have a vent rib either. Was it a 2-3/4”?

I don’t think ‘53’s had speedload, which means you have to depress the bolt release to reload. Not a big deal if you know.

And it’s not a Sweet Sixteen unless it says it starting in 1948 and it has the lightening cuts. Here’s a great resource: LINK

A lot of folks try to pawn off non-Sweets as Sweets in order to increase desirability and price.

Go buy it. And welcome to the club.

As I keep searching I don’t believe it’s a sweet 16. Only the 1947s weren’t stamped “sweet sixteen”. So this would just be an A5 in 16 gauge.

Not sure how much the price difference with that is but seems significant.

Also owner wasn’t selling it as a sweet, I just thought I stumbled across a group of years that weren’t stamped and he didn’t know.

I’d still think about buying it for $550 if it’s in good shape and modified (**) or improved cylinder (**-). What’s the barrel length and choke?

I have a plain barrel 1952 non-Sweet non-speed load. The plain barrel is better for me for hunting. I have a 1963 Sweet Sixteen vent rib. Both modified choke. Great guns.

I just looked and speed load was a running change from late 1953-early 1954. So it may or may not have speed load.

It’s not in “good” shape by any means. Didn’t check choke size but guessing 26” barrel. I’ll be checking it out again Wednesday for choke size and barrel length. Kind of on the fence but if it’s there Wednesday and not a full choke I’ll probably get it.

If it’s in decent shape I would buy it for that price. Browning A-5’s are only going to go up in price.

Yes you should buy it as long as the action functions and it is a complete gun. It’s not the best performing $550 gun you can purchase, but you can’t purchase functioning 70 yr old guns ever day.

I inherited my Grndfather's A5 16 g. He bought it in 1946. I watched him shoot hundreds of birds with it.

No they aren’t, they did spike when first discontinued but the bottom fell out afterwards. Unshot in the box will appreciate some but many were made which will keep valuesdown. Wouldn’t touch anything that’s not in excellent condition.
