The Department of Energy said Thursday it will release $3.5 billion to groups developing direct air capture and other technologies that remove carbon dioxide, which when released into the atmosphere causes global warming.

China and the other countries that have terrible air quality need the CO2 scrubbers. Our air quality isn't bad enough that we need them. Once again we are acting like we are the problem when it's other countries causing the problems

Plants use CO2 as food and exhaust O2 as plants respire.
Without CO2, plants cannot grow and there will be no oxygen for animals to breathe.

How are they going to store the CO2? After all, trees are really just carbon storage. All that carbon gets released back in the atmosphere after a tree dies and rots away or burns.

I have long thought that capturing greenhouse gasses is the best way to remove them, but I’m not sure how/if that would work if electricity is used to power the machine.

That’s irrelevant, inconvenient, and tends to get in the way of awarding billion$ and making people rich.
Would be funny to prove they have to burn X coal to run the scrubber to remove Y CO2, and find out that X emissions are greater than Y removal.
Meaning it’s a net burden on the climate.
