To settle the lawsuit, California agreed to spend $2 billion to help children impacted the most to recover from lost learning and the mental health impact caused by school closures during the pandemic. The federal government granted public school districts more than $190 billion between March 2020 and March 2021 for that purpose, but the plaintiffs argued that in California the state failed to ensure local districts targeted the money for students who needed the most help.

In California, around 10,000 public schools were closed during the pandemic, impacting around 6 million students.

“We know in California that there were between 800,000 and a million kids who had no digital access whatsoever for 18 and 19 months,” said Rosenbaum. “What does that mean? It doesn’t mean they got bad education. It means they got no education.”

A substantial percentage will recycle through the teacher’s unions to the democrat politicians.

Strange how the teachers and politicians who pressed the hardest for the closures get to reap the public rewards while keeping kids ignorant!

Nearly 1 out of 6 CA public school students had no on line access, therefor no education for 18 months. That's across all age groups.

thats what pisses me off the most

the teachers, who didnt have to go to work or even do their jobs, got a free year off with pay and benefits, and now they, NOT THE KIDS, they get paid even more for not doing their jobs and refusing to go to work.

every penny of that money needs to go directly to the parents of those kids and not a single penny for the lazy arse teachers and admins

The settlement’s provisions still must be enacted into law by the state legislature, directs school districts to use extended school days, tutors and mental health professionals to help these kids

A grift to progressive activists. Modern communism.

Cal is a demographics time bomb

quote:

Over half (58% - up from 51%) of California students read below grade level in 3rd grade. Most never catch up.

For low-income Latino 3rd graders, 74% are below grade level. For low-income African American students, 78%. These groups make up half of all California students - more than 3 million children

Only 1 California school district (out of 285 ranked) has over 50% of low-income Latinx students at grade level. No districts have over 50% for low-income African American students.

On national tests, California ranks 40th among the states in 4th grade reading level. For low-income students, California is tied for 38th.

On these tests, half of California low-income 4th graders score "Below Basic," the lowest level of achievement. Only 20% are "Proficient" or "Advanced." Even for higher-income students, 48% of 4th graders are below "Proficient

It's California... aren't those two the same thing?

I mean... that's just that many months they didn't get to fill those kids full of progressive liberal mush.

I guess they have a lot of catching up to do.

Just fyi, they will never catch up. Because while the schools screwed up, the real blame lies with the parents.

The deal is the kids most at risk have parents that don't care about their children. So the parents didn't make their kids do anything.

Irreparable harm was done to millions of kids across the USA to slightly extend the lives of the elderly and obese. The effects of which will endure for decades.
Unforgivable.

So the people of California have to pay the other people of California. Sounds like wealth redistribution to me.

It's also alarming how disconnected people are from their children's education that their kids would get zero education for almost 2 years because the government didn't provide it. These dipshits couldn't cobble together a few books, videos for their kids to read and watch? They just let the kids sit there and do nothing the entire time while their brains rotted away?
