They were protesting their peers being sent off to Vietnam to be slaughtered via a draft. Say what you want but that is at least something semi worthy of a protest. Compare it to the idiots today that don’t have a clue what or who they are actually protesting. I think history is proving the Vietnam War protesters right we had no business being over there. Eisenhower warned us of all of this and nobody listened and the MIC doesn’t care because they want the money the grift brings.

if your birthday was one of the first 50 or so picked each year, you were going to vietnam. i guess if you went to college you got a deferment. anyway, many joined other military branches instead of being drafted into the army.
You're describing the lottery (birthday). For most of the war there was no lottery. You were picked by the local draft board to meet their quota. When the lottery was established they advertised that the first 150 names would be drafted. This was a lie. They were trying to scare kids under 150 to volunteer for another service besides the army.
The college deferment was there for the first half of the war and then was dropped before the lottery came in. So, lots of kids finished their freshman year of college and then got drafted when their birthday was in the first 100.

I appreciate the thoughts behind this.
I watched a documentary last night, so in today’s America, I’m an expert right?
The documentary was from 2005.
From a Birds Eye view of the decade you can see the same strife today but with different demographics. Maybe that’s true for most generations.
This might be a very liberal statement, and a two hour documentary doesn’t give me a leg to stand on, but I don’t blame the kids who were protesting their generation going off to Vietnam to kill people half the world away when it was small country in south east Asia they hadn’t ever heard of and weren’t a direct threat to our safety.
Women’s lib/LGBT/BLM all kind of reminded me of the same fight the college kids claim to have today.
I can’t imagine what a shock the sixties were to conservative minded people. From church people, to law enforcement, to the average southern person.
I’m glad my generation (1981) didn’t have that battle to face in the early 2000. The war on terror ended up being complicated in its own. Having to deal with civil rights for 50% off the country would be a lot for a young country to go through in the middle of a war.
You can sure see similarities between the decades. Different minority group. Sensing generational breaking money being sent all around the world. So far it’s just money and support. I pray it doesn’t ask for boots on the ground. Political strife…. Assassinations of major names and political offices in the country.
It was a scary decade. But, we made it out.

2 of the 4 students killed weren't even protesting.
The girl in the famous photo was 14 and not a student.

Comparing Vietnam and/or the Civil Rights era to LGBTQIA/BLM is a joke.

Huh? 85% of the US was caucasian in the 1960's. Unloess your point went totally over my head which is possible.

Richard J. Daley <--- New York needs this guy in the governor's mansion.

No one could accuse the Chicago cops of discrimination.
They savagely attacked hippies, yippies, New Leftists, revolutionaries, dissident Democrats, newsmen, photographers, passers-by, clergymen and at least one cripple.

he ordered the cops to "shoot to kill" arsonists and to "shoot to maim or cripple" looters.

Fortunately, there was no shooting.

"The force used was the force that was necessary," insisted Police Superintendent James Conlisk Jr.
He could point to the fortunate fact that no one was killed.
He also pointed out -- almost with pride -- that the casualties included 152 cops.

And it wasn't just VN and Civil Rights. The exact same period of time included the wild drug craze and the sexual revolution (the pill became common). You also had the welfare explosion from LBJ's 1964 bills. Also, the divorce rate spiked due to 'no fault' grounds. Add the nuclear war standoff with the USSR and a lot of college friends of mine openly stated: 'The world is gonna end soon. We might as well have a good time now.'

"Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming."
Neil Young led people to believe that Nixon called in the NG. Not true.

True. And a big beneficiary of the shooting was the Tom Hayden's SDS.
They set up recruiting stations on every college campus. Heck, USL (now UL-Lafayette} had over 100 students join the SDS. And that's hardly a left leaning campus.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to compare the two side by side like it was a legit comparison. I’m saying I can see these kids these days just wanting to get behind something.
I know the civil rights and Vietnam were much more important than what the protests are about today. There were literal American issues.
I was just making a statement regarding the actions on the campuses today, and the kids thinking this is the fight they want to have.
I hope that cleared that up enough.

No it’s understandable, and I thought about it when I typed it.
I was including the women’s lib movement. Maybe I shouldn’t because I don’t know what kind of craziness that specifically brought

It brought braless which was a good thing.

Yessir! That is a net positive!

Did the majority of the students win law suits?
Sorry for late reply - obviously 4 were killed and many that were shot and otherwise injured all sued. The entire event started because of rock throwing students and then one national guard thought he heard a shot and started firing.
Jurors were not kind to the government
As for the draft, I remember sitting in the car with my mom and dad listening to the radio announcing the draft and they called my brothers birthday - my mom started crying.
