Should the US be concerned about an EMP attack/event?

An EMP can occur from another nation using an EMP weapon or the sun can experience a CME ( Coronal Mass Ejection).

The US power grid is not hardened and the utility companies do not have the necessary spare substation transformers or line transformers to handle such an event. It’s been estimated if such an event were to occur in a critical area of the US power grid it could take the majority of the US power grid down.

Nearly 80% of the critical power grid transformers are not manufactured in the US, most are made overseas, primarily in China and Europe.

Should we be concerned? Should we be concerned when CCP balloons are drifting across the continental US with a payload the size of three city buses and that payload could be anything from surveillance equipment to potentially an EMP device?

I’m probably just being a worry wart, just a bit paranoid.

Yes. The Walking Dead isn't about zombies. 90%, at least, of the US population will die.

In the case of a CME, at least 75% of the world's population will be gone. At least a lot of 3rd world countries have populations who can still survive in 18th century conditions.

We need something to happen here to wake the people up to how incompetent our government is and how they have been corrupt for over 100 years.

False. It would be exceedingly easy to "harden" the grid against an EMP/CME attack... and would cost far less than what we sent to Ukraine last year.

Exactly! And that’s my point. We have the most incompetent and corrupt people at the levers of power.

Just about every car would be dead where it sits. Chaos in the streets. Enjoy your hard grid. I’ll be in my bunker.

The US should have purchased all the spare materials years ago and kept everything in storage. All the money sent to the Ukraine and other money laundering countries could have gone to harden the grid.

Solar events like happened in the telegram days, have always happened and will happen again. That isn't anything that a reasonable person can deny.

But the vast majority of people and gov't are not preparing for the inevitable.

So the obvious conclusion is the humans are not reasonable as a species.

I was on the telco/telecommunications side, just retired. I use to talk to the power utility lineman when our cabinets would lose power during storms and everyone of them would complain about not having enough replacement transformers.

The energy it would take for an EMP to affect any large area of this country is immense.

I don’t think it’s possible with current technology.

Now, multiple strikes against key targets would be possible but again I think the size of the country helps is in that scenario.

Our transportation and energy infrastructure simply failing on its own from age and lack of investment is probably the more likely scenario.
