Charges should be brought against people who commit actual crimes, not speech.
Terrorist threats are a federal felony. Trespassing is a misdemeanor. Squatting on public land is trespassing and a misdemeanor.
Oh look actual crimes.

Agreed. Dangerous stuff. But in reality, free speech is a dying theory in our once freedom loving country.

I agree with OP but Abbott isn’t having APD arrest people because of what they are chanting but for remaining after being told to leave.
That’s obviously where the truth lies. No one is getting arrested for chanting, but they are being removed for illegally occupying a state university and disrupting students.

Abbott is an idiot. He’s in it for the money.
Very possible.
But at least Greg Abbott also had a real professional career before getting into politics. Can’t really say the same about folks like McCarthy, Gaetz and AOC. Politics has been pretty much their sole professional career.

This doesn’t mean anything, he’s just your standard politician.

This can’t be overstated. The same point applies to “hate” crimes.
The goal here is to criminalize thought. That is why I always use “scare” quotes when discussing such matters.

This thread is a solid reminder of the differences between the true “right” and “moderate” views compared to leftists. Kudos for the majority of politards on agreeing with the OP. Leftists want you jailed over speech they disagree with.

Here it is again! This keeps being repeated in this thread: it’s like a never-ending game of “whack-a-mole.”
Again, that is not what Abbott said. More importantly, Abbott’s executive order specifically allows protesters to be targeted for using “antisemitic” language.
No matter how vile and hypocritical we find these protesters, it is an egregious violation of the 1st Amendment to target these protesters for using "antisemitic” speech. The ultimate goal of “conservatives” like Abbott is to criminalize criticism of our nation’s “Israel First” foreign policy agenda.
Certainly government officials have the duty to punish violent threats, violent acts, trespassing and the blockage of free passage on campus by “protestors.” Yet as stated succinctly by Thunder above, the punishment for these crimes must be made independent of the content of the speech itself.

Here we go again!
Again, who in this thread has argued that such crimes shouldn’t be punished?

My fire-breathing rhetoric on this board to the contrary, I am conservative in my personal demeanor, my religious expression, my financial affairs, my dress, etc… Yet when discussing politics, the term “conservative” has been so abused in today’s political lexicon, it has been rendered meaningless.
Too many “conservatives” aren’t opposed in theory to the Leviathan State, they simply want their side in control. This is why I identify myself as a supporter of the principles of limited government and not as a political “conservative.”

Free speech laws protect free speech.
They do not give people the right to break other laws under the guise of free speech.

Many Americans are rightly comparing this to the suppression of speech by authoritarian regimes.
We can take free speech lessons from the left… such as when they are so understanding when you use the wrong pronouns and wear a red hat.

Politicians use the most severe language they can get away with. Abbott is doing that here. The left used the word insurrection over and over again, but no one was ever arrested or charged with it. This is a non issue.

Frick that, arrest them all. They are protesting to start shite and trouble for the universities. Not one of those people live over seas. They live here in America. If you wanna protest go to Israel you stupid mfers.
