Do airlines even pretend to enforce carry on rules anymore?

Just back from a multi city work trip, and the amount of people putting half their worldly possessions in the overhead bin was out of control

Obviously oversized rollaboard bags, totes, shopping bags, boots, you name it

If you weren’t boarding in the first couple of groups, you were basically SOL on overhead spacei

I know checking bags isn’t ideal, but you shouldn’t have to pay for first class or premium economy just to have a fair shot to have a place for your bag

The entire airline industry has gone to shite post-covid.

FAs locked arms with teachers/nurses and became overly entitled. They were on a power trip via mask rules and since that went away, they just dont give a shite.

If they quit charging the BS fees for checking bags, the boarding process would speed up immensely. Just bake it into the ticket price and move on. SW Bags Fly Free has distinguished them. I have been reading that they are close to abandoning the cattle car approach and going to assigned seats.

Going to the whole carry on fiasco, I've noticed on 2 of my last 3 trips on SW, that the FAs now take an overhead bin over aisle 1/2 on the left side of the plane. They have a key and put their shite in there and lock it so nobody else can.

I first noticed 3 weeks ago when I opened and it had 1 bag in it. I put my stuff in and sat in the bulkhead seat. 2 min later a deadheading FA asked who's stuff it was and I said it was mine... She said "that bin is for the FAs". I said "where the hell do you expect bulkhead passengers to put their stuff since you all are occupying a whole bin to yourselves". Her comment was "well we need to put our stuff somewhere too".

She made me remove my bags then locked it with 1 bag in it. I ended up having to move back to row 5/6 because that was the next available bin.

I've taken more than 400 flights on SW in my life and I had never sen this before. FAs always put their bags in the storage between buikhead and FA seats or in the very back.

Move to Wednesday coming back from STL and one of the FAs got on a min after we started boarding, proceeded to take a key out of her pocket, open the same bin and put her purse in, then lock it back.

So no personal items? No tablets, books, headphones, chargers, snacks, etc. Just whatever you can carry on you? Wouldn’t that make for some boring arse flights?

The European ones certainly seem to. The American ones not so much.

I just returned from an international flight.

People will have standard carry-on wheeled luggage, a backpack the size of a sofa and a huge book bag or purse and cram it all in the overhead.

It is infuriating. Everything besides the carry on should go at their feet.

Coming home, the airline asked people to check their carry on for free and I volunteered for that. I don't care if my carry on is late coming home.
So I breezed to my seat with only a small backpack at my feet.

Sorry. Found out my favorite cruise line doesn't have the type of coca cola I wanted so had to load my carry on with a few 12 packs

That is what the small backpack at your feet is for.

Is that not considered carryon luggage?

No, that’s a personal item.

Gotcha. So we would still be in the same situation of having a FA determine which class luggage is.

And the personal item should not be placed in the overhead, but at your feet,

Its pretty easy, you get two items: One that goes under the seat in front of you and one up to, believe its 22inches roller that goes into the overhead.

Thats it.

The problem is the jackasses who put their backpacks or purses in the overhead and take all of the space instead of under the seat like they are supposed to.

They need to. Only a low class individual would bring a large carry on with them. Should be limited to a backpack or small duffle bag

Southwest would jump way up on my list if so. Everything about southwest is great except for their idiotic boarding process

Yup, would instantly solve the disabled boarding process and the fatties that abuse it to get bulkhead and front seats.
