Thinking about making a trip to the upper peninsula this summer with the wife and kids.
Looking at flying into Detroit and renting to a car to head North. Any must do’s or best time to go. Best places to stay ?

Upper Peninsula is great, but the Traverse City / Sleeping Bear Dunes area is better. Try to do both if possible.

I was there last summer and loved it. Obviously Mackinac Island is a must. Hotels will be expensive though, even the lower quality ones. I stayed at a place right on the lake, it was more of a lodge than a hotel and it had a small indoor water park. Forgot what it was called but it was fine.

Pictured rocks lakeshore is great. Campsites along 12 mile beach within the park are among my favorite back country camp sites anywhere.

A little far if Detroit is your starting point but the porcupine mountains state park is also terrific hiking and camping.

I’ve heard the copper harbor area is also lovely but have never been personally.

No bugs at Pictured Rocks except harmless mayflies. Perfect camping spot.
Soo Locks are cool to visit.
Mackinaw Island
Petoskey
Charlevoix
Traverse City
Leland

All great summer spots.

Really depends on timing. By mid august biting insects are largely gone. But weather is also starting to turn up there by mid august.

I really would recommend the camping sites along twelve mile beach as close to the bluff as possible. That way you can do a day hike to the bluffs and another to the interior lakes. Camp sites along the bluffs largely cut you off from actually accessing and getting into Lake Superior

Detroit and renting to a car

This summer we went to a family's reunion in Indiana, renting a car out of Detroit was so much cheaper than Chicago or Indy. So we flew into Detroit.

We flew to Detroit- Henry Ford Museum was awesome

If you go to Ann Abor
