Great pics and info … I have been in SE Asia for 8 months for work and Vietnam is by far my favorite place (Saigon, Hoi An, Dalat, Hue and Hanoi are all great stops with many more.) I am mostly in Thailand, which i enjoy as well. Just a different way of life — more relaxed, less divisive, inexpensiv...
Why would you do that?
I wasn't thinking clearly .... birthday party with my Thai crew, whiskey was flowing... etc.
I am fairly accustomed to the food in this part of the world, but that combo did me in for 8 hours.

I ate raw pork in a salad a few months in SE Asian and was fine. I’m sure you will be too.
I did get deathly ill eating oysters this week that were chilled top and bottom in non potable ice. That wasn’t fun and i know better.

the opening of Raising Arizona until the sun is setting in the desert and the yodeling kicks in is my favorite of all time.

Georgia easily (or at least the best representative of the South)
- not too far south
- thriving cultural production (films and music)
- has a major metropolitan city that is the de facto capital
- not too trashy or poor overall (looking at you Miss.)
- home to many fortune 500's
- pr...

re: Was early 2000’s the greatest era of local band scene in BR?
Posted by JW on 4/27/24 at 10:03 am
I would say 1991-2001 were the better years, especially with the Varsity reopening in the fall of 91'. There were many nights when you had decisions to make between the Bayou, Chelseas, Murphy's on occasion and the Art Bar turned The Church turned The Spanish Moon. Not to mention -- old staples like...
Did this stuff really happen?
The material is based solely on the fictional novel of the same name. I don't recall any anecdotal stories or research about this coming out from the Vietnamese refugee community at that time.

re: Seinfeld: Hollywood is OVER.
Posted by JW on 4/25/24 at 7:12 am
The traditional "Hollywood System" model is changing, but the industry as a whole is hardly over.
More filmmakers are making good TV ... RDJ for instance --- won an oscar and is also in an A24/HBO series in the same year.
Consumption and production are evolving, but films are not going...

University 4 was the best. Broadmoor had its moments. I still remember seeing Trainspotting there in college.
of course there were some great movies then ….. all of the real creative talent was making films —- not a million good TV shows. Way more of a balance and 2024 was hardly devoid of good...
re: The Sympathizer this Sunday

I have to say I thought the first episode was very good and incredibly well paced. To be expected from PCW. The sets evoked 1970’s Saigon better than most, if not all American produced projects.
I am biased by my fondness of the book and participation in the production. But still highly recommen...
The Sympathizer this Sunday
Posted by JW on 4/12/24 at 7:16 am
Early reviews are mostly positive …. Curious to see what the board thinks. The first three were directed by PCWook - and are breezy before it gets dark and more complicated. I hope people don’t give up on it midway....
