You see a lot of properly built fences with 8’ spaced posts sagging? The only time I’ve seen a fence sag is when some dumdum installed his runners oriented horizontally and used clips to hang them between posts. Yuck
Post spacing 8' with 16' runners crown up should never sag right? My ...
Looks like the weather is going to delay my project, so can we have a sidebar about concrete and its exact purposes and the best way to do it? I'm just going to write out my thoughts and see if you guys have any input. Obviously the main purpose of the concrete (or any hole filler) is to hold t...
I guess I don't get where the shear force is coming from on the rail to post attachment. If it's wood shrinkage I don't think a 2x4 shrinks much lengthwise. Is it the weight of the fence pulling down?...
Coated torx head deck screws are the answer.
Like these for pickets? [link=(https://www.lowes.com/pd/Grip-Rite-PrimeGuard-Plus-8-x-1-5-8-in-Polymer-Deck-Screws-5-lb/1000716344)]LINK[/link] [img]https://mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/82b01b1d-fe6c-4bbe-94bc-3a77839e46af/10218...
That's my bad, I just checked and it's a 10" auger. So at your estimate I'd need a little over 100# of concrete per post. ...
you will likely need 1-1/2 bags per hole (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Yeah this can make a big difference. The common "rule of thumb" that I see is the hole should be 3x the post diameter, but that seems way too big and would take like 5 50lb bags to fill each one. I was going to ...
I've never seen a fence with the runners carriage bolted to the posts, only screwed or nailed. I imagine that would be strong, and since you're drilling the holes there's less risk of splitting the ends. ...
Assuming I go with concrete, is the fast set "no mix" quikrete good? Wet the hole, pour the bag, spray it some more and it's good? ...
Can't link as I will be making them myself (waterjet), but they will be similar to these Simpson ones except without the folded ears. And of course instead of going on top the post, my runners will be on t...

Use nails not screws to fasten runners to posts
Why is this?
I'm wondering the same. The poster said it's for added shear strength, but is shearing screws off a common problem? ...
people are giving good real world advice here.
I know, and it's much appreciated.
Don’t overthink it with foam or clips. Just do it the right way that’s been tried and true.
I think I've decided against the foam, but I will still use the clips. The staggered 16s will add...
Absolutely go 16’ 2x4’s staggered. Don’t even build the fence if you don’t.
I will, but I will still use my clips. I get that staggering the joints will avoid making 8 foot panels that can flex and/or fall over, but we still have 1 or 2 weak joints per post that I think eventually w...
I don't think anyone commented on the 8' posts, but since everyone is commenting on strength should I get 10s and trim them? And maybe dig my holes a couple feet but then drive the posts into the dirt as deep as the skid steer can shove them?...
Oh I see, y'all are just talking about staggering the joints, but still butting them end to end? I think just as big a failure point is splitting the 2x4s right there at the ends. I want more length of board to attach to. I guess y'all have convinced me on the 16s though. I was thinking I would ...
The goal should be to do the job right, not to do it with the least amount of work.
I just meant that the $110 material cost might not be the only cost associated with using 16 footers.
not sure what you are getting at here, the runners will be inline if you use 16 footers a...
Man I sure hope you aren't the guy coming build mine this weekend
There's two schools of thought. Stagger the runners for strength, or don't and let a storm coming through take the panels and leave the posts.
I got the idea for the brackets from a guy who built a ...
Use 16' 2x4s instead, alternating where your top/middle/bottom runner end on each post. It'll be stronger that way.
I like strength! For whatever reason 16s are more per foot than 8s, 68 cents vs 52 cents, and that works out to about $110 more for this job. I'm not sure if it would ...
Will build this weekend, will order material today or tomorrow. One call should be out Thursday. About 200' of 6' fence. I think it will be pretty standard. 4x4x8' posts w/ 8" x ~2.5' hole. I plan to use foam instead of concrete. I'll have a skid-steer with 8" auger. Three runners w/ 8' 2x4...
they need more wholesome cartoons to watch instead of the shite that’s on tv now.
Tons of sex jokes and innuendo in those old cartoons. Male characters acting like females all the time, etc. Some samples: [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGE3oYp7tNY[/embed]...

Yeah for 2.5" drives (ssd or hdd) you just need a sata-usb cable. They are probably all the same. If you have a 3.5" (desktop) drive you'll need an enclosure with its own power supply. ...
