Under the radar riff-meister. And melodic composer. Knows when to solo / fill and not overdo it.

Petty isn't Petty without him.

Could be on the Bass list. If the preference is more Punk-ish.

Frank Zappa = Buckingham?

I get it -- everything is relative in the arts.

What are Zappa's strengths? From what I've heard of his work, it's...choppy blues and ambush of the avant garde and unexpected.

After many years of contemplating this, SRV is it for me.

How can you not have Winton Marsalis on this list? By people who really know jazz (fellow musicians and critics). He considered the preeminent trumpet player of the last 50 yrs.

It's already been debated here many times and as one poster said, there are many categories to choose from.

The Who bassist. His name I’ll probably misspell. I’ll just say John E……

He may not be remembered as the best guitarist ever, but Terry Kath’s riffs in 25 or 6 to 4 are among the best I’ve seen.

I don't keep up with all categories, but I know some of the best in each. I'm open to new names if anyone has them, but what I know for sure is that in the category I like the most, blues, SRV should be in anyone's top 3. He's 1 on my list, technically and artistically.

The best guitarists of all time are mainly found in the credits on the back of albums. Most don’t have their names in the bands or on the front of the record.

A few had semi successful solo careers like Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon, etc…..
Obviously Chet Atkins had an amazing solo career.

Rock and Blues:

1: EVH, most innovative, talented guitarist and musician of the last 50 years.

1A: SRV - could make a guitar sing unlike any other.

Beyond them, there are so many great guitarists: Lane, Malmsteen, Winter, Duane Allman, Dimeola, Gibbons, and on.
