Shocking/chlorinating a well

Anybody do this periodically to your water well? If so, what procedure do you use? Seems like open up the well, dump in a couple cups of bleach, back flush it with a hose from the house. I'm also seeing some people use chlorine granules. What do ya'll do?

One cup of 12.5% should be fine, just make sure you flush it pretty well. Bleach is highly corrosive 7ppm+

Apparently a lot of people do it to sanitize their water and keep it smelling good. I ran into the old owner of my home recently and he said he used to shock it once/year.

been on a well since 1995 and never have done that. In fact I’d never heard of it until now

Not all well water is the same.

It can kill any iron-eating bacteria that’s found in some wells. Typical “clear iron” wells may have a filamentous brown “algae” that starts to form in the lines which show up in toilets, tank bowls, etc.
In my opinion it is probably a losing battle unless done a lot. If I had that problem I would likely install a chlorine injection system near the softener.
