BRPD’s Murphy Paul: 'Sick and tired'- Police Chief vents frustrations after deadly week.

Police were making plans to tout that decrease in homicides when a rash of gun violence that started this past weekend, several of the shootings turning out to be fatal. As police Chief Murphy Paul lamented the sudden up-tick in shootings, he seemingly turned his frustration toward the courts.
"I get sick and tired of hearing from my police officers that we're dealing with the same individuals," Paul said. "And I'm talking about people that we arrested for homicides. Facts! I'm talking about people we arrested for shootings. Facts!"
The chief's fiery comments came after the commander of violent crimes offered an update to eight deadly shootings in the last seven days. There were several other shootings that sent people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. "At least two appear to be drug-related. Three were arguments or fights that led to shootings between persons who were acquainted or related. Three have unknown motives or suspects at this time," Capt. Kevin Heinz said.
"We have to stop these violent criminals who are continuing to terrorize our neighborhoods out on the streets. If we just focus on them, we could reduce crime another 20%," Chief Paul said.
The problem, officials say, is repeat offenders, easily getting back on the streets.
"There has to be more accountability, more than 4,000 felon arrests last year, now how many of them do you think are still walking the streets? Do a story on that," Chief Paul said before abruptly ending the press conference.
WBRZ has repeatedly covered that exact problem in East Baton Rouge, where repeat offenders are given low bonds. Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto even sat down with one judge who spoke candidly on the issue.
Meanwhile police say they are doing everything they can, including adding more license plate readers and 48 crime cameras across the city, as well as using more drones. They hope those measures will help combat violent crime.
Chief Paul also asked the community take advantage of a long list of resources provided by the city.

Is bail something every criminal is entitled to in Baton Rouge? Or can some of these bastards just be detained without bail after a hearing?

It's unusual but you can have no bond. Murder cases or flight risk.

Kinda sounds like he’s calling out the judges. I’d be frustrated too arresting the same ones over and over.
When we hear about rearresting the same violent criminals, it’s usually the same judges names I hear. Eboni Rose Johnson has basically replaced Trudy White.

He can be sick and tired all he wants, but until they hold the black community accountable for acting like this and perpetuating these crimes nothing is going to change. Whites do plenty of stupid things and commit plenty of crimes, however the news is dominated almost 100% by crimes committed by blacks.

No Murphy. You need to stop all lawlessness. Murderers, thieves, drag racers, etc. enforce ALL the laws. We want low and order. Not cherry picked statistics that make you look like you’re doing your job.

I don’t deny he’s correct about lowering crime by 20%. Great. Go for it. But don’t forget all the other shite while he’s trying to create next summer’s talking point.
I do find it interesting that he’s calling out judges and the DA. Fun to watch these losers turn on each other. So is it our feckless DA or corrupt woke judges who needs to feel some heat next?

He's a shithead puppet/yes man for the moron mayor, buy he's right. Cops will tell you they don't even bother making some arrests because they know the a-hole will be out in hours. They also have a damned good idea of who has committed a lot of these crimes but have to wait until they have a mountain of overwhelming evidence before they will trust the DAs office and courts with it.

It’s all connected. He and his people need to do actual police work. And when they do, DAs and judges need to ensure that violent criminals are put where they belong, and for a substantial period of time. There’s plenty of blame to be passed around. Sure, Paul is right about this specifically. But let’s not pretend he’s doing BR any favors with how he runs things either.
