So the government gets to grant themselves another paid holiday on the dime of the taxpayers who have to work that day?

I'm trying to get a permit (waiting on the government to give me permission to do work on a customers private land) for a project and all government offices are shut down for Juneteenth.

Anyone who is productive doesn't even know what Juneteenth is. Just another day for the bloodsuckers to suck.

ETA: What a dumb name, (Juneteenth) for this Holiday.

You should tell the Jews they shouldn't celebrate Passover anymore while you're at it

It is possible to be both "productive" AND well-informed.

I will grant you that it is something new for you non-Texans. BBQs on 19-June have been a Texas thing as long as I can remember.

There was a thread about this holiday on the OT last night that got zapped. I wonder why.

I've known about it my entire life and never had a problem with it.

I never heard of it until last year when Congress passed it as a Federal Holiday. And I'm someone who is pretty up to speed on the news and cultural trends.

Older guys I work with had no clue what it was, and the general consensus I have heard is "I thought they already had MLK day, now they need another one?".

The name is beyond stupid. It sounds like something stupid people think is clever, like calling Missouri "Mizzou", or the UConn Huskies (because it sounds like "Yukon," get it !?). Stupidity carved into stone.

"they"

Apparently, only "they" can commemorate the end of human chattel slavery in the US.

Certainly not something that "we" would ever acknowledge.

I'm older and grew up around a lot of good black folks who recognized it as a holiday, even when it was not recognized as an official holiday. And I understand why they did and still do.

The number of nonblack people of any sort clamoring for this holiday was virtually nonexistent. Don't be obtuse.

Umderstand comments on anither paid fed holiday, but do think celebrating the end of slavery is a worthy holiday.

My company made it a paid holiday, I think we are literally the only firm in our industry (MEP Engineering) that is closed today. I'll take it, whatever.
