Plus these series are long AF. Dragon Ball and DBZ are each over 150 episodes long

you say this like its a good thing.

thats my one complaint about a lot of anime series. The amount of filler bullshite is legendary. DBZ could easily been half as long episode wise.

Multiple good recs in here, so I won't pile on them.

Anime is generally not aimed at kids which is a huge misconception amongst a lot of the American populace. The majority of anime I've enjoyed I would never show to a kid

As for weird, it really depends on your bar for weird. A lot of 'weird' stuff can flow fine in anime because it is anime whereas it would be extremely jarring in a live action setting.

With this in mind I would suggest that if you watch DBZ, make it DBZ Kai. It is a remastered and abridged version (about 100+ episodes shorter) of the original DBZ.

Just watch DBZ: Abridged on YouTube. Absolute masterpiece.

DBZ, Yugioh, and SAO are all greatly improved by Abridged parody series.

Well technically Pokemon is by far the most popular but DBZ is a strong second

If you’re into deep stories and allegory, check out Neon Genesis Evangelion.

My Hero Academia is good and funny as hell.

Watched it earlier this year. It’s like a d&d campaign. Pretty violent. The giant tits on all the female characters gets ridiculous

Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Akame ga Kill!, Attack on Titan (kinda weird), and Hunter X Hunter are all really solid. My friend who first didn't care for anime really liked KonoSuba as an intro (also first liked One Punch Man)

I didn't care for One Punch Man or My Hero as others have listed... just drawn out IMO but anime is such a wide range

Like everyone else, Cowboy Bebop is probably #1

Other stuff that's probably not too weird:

Vinland Saga
Steins;Gate
Trigun
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Samurai Champloo
One Punch Man
Durarara
Bungo Stray Dogs
Erased

For movies, probably Princess Mononoke
Ninja Scroll
Akira

What else would be like Last Airbender?

The Dragon Prince (Netflix) was written/created by the same people as Avatar.

A little more for kids but I thoroughly enjoyed them is the Tales of Arcadia shows (Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards). Created by Guillermo Del Toro and produced by DreamWorks.

Really surprised no one has mentioned my new favorite, Demon Slayer (Kimetsu No Yaiba). I've watched close to 1000 animes the last 30 years and this one is just next level imo. Unrivaled artwork and it just keeps getting better every season.

I would have put this on my list, but I tried to avoid shows I thought might be considered too weird. I tried to go no further than sci-fi or super powers since super hero stuff is so mainstream. Also left off stuff like most of the ghibli movies or stuff that seems to be geared toward a younger demographic.

I left off a lot of stuff that involved hunting ghosts/demons/vampires, mechs, aliens, and shows about being trapped in a video game/other world. Otherwise, I'd add on

Full Metal Alchemist
Demon Slayer
Tokyo Ghoul
Attack on Titan
Re:Zero
Blood Blockade Battlefront
Fire Force
A lot of Gundam
My Hero Academia
Code Geass
Darling in the Franxx
Jujutsu Kaisen
Dororo
Guran Lagen
Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon
Magi: The Labrynth of Magic
A Certain Scientific Railgun
Psycho Pass
Jobless Reincarnation
The Devil is a Part Timer
Hellsing
Soul Eater
Beyond the Boundary
Chainsaw Man
Dorohedero
Blue Exorcist

...I'm missing a ton.

Record of Ragnarok (Netflix)

Very solid anime with some really good fights. It's based on the manga by the same name.

Basically, 13 humans must fight 13 gods to decide the ultimate fate of humanity. Has a Street Fighter vibe to it.

I'm not the biggest anime guy, but this show has been very entertaining so far especially with who the humans have selected as their fighters.

New episodes dropped on Wednesday.
