The port of the Mississippi River alone should be a rather large economic driver. Miami is a closer option for anything coming from the Eastern countries now, but Mississippi River access was a massive deal at one point in time.

The Mississippi River is the largest port system in the country, and it’s not particularly close.

Lacombe, maybe? Thank God it went to FL. I can’t imagine Disney traffic here. It’s bad enough with the tourists we have now.

Back when people sent love letters through the mail they would go to Eros to mail them. Eros is the Greek god of love.

The whole Disney thing is an urban legend. Someone asked Roy Disney about that rumor back in the early 80s and he said it was never happening. They had been buying land up in C.Fl since the late 50s. Walt wanted to get in on the vacation business that Florida was capitalizing on.. Louisiana was not in the tourism business .

Every one of them if just one more citizen would have moved there...

If it could be moved 20 miles to the west it would be.

Yes if I remember right there was also a documentary or something that said the Lousiaian chatter was to throw off Florida real estate and property owners so he could pick up the land at a low price.

If they would have known what ue was doing the price would have increased tremendously

Normal College (now NSU) would have been in Atlanta, but it only had a spur while the railroad ran through Natchitoches.

Monroe was a happening place back in the day. Just didn't work out because it wasn't the center of anything.

New Orleans was the 10th largest U.S. city by population in 1880.

In fairness, the metro has continued to grow, and is up to nearly 1.3M. The city itself is mostly landlocked, and contiguous land incorporated as other cites. And while it's grown vertically a bit, that's always going to be a struggle. Because, you know, it's basically on swampland

Now, obviously New Orleans has a host of fricking problems, and I'm not discounting that, but it was always going to get outpaced by places like Houston and Atlanta with vastly more land and somewhere like New York with miles and miles of bedrock to build on top of.

My question is what cities in Louisiana could've or should've been bigger if it wasn't for unforeseen circumstances (Hurricanes, bad city politics, etc.)

Morgan City.

The Mississippi River would be flowing through it today if not for significant intervention from mankind.

Houston gained most of the oil business that New Orleans lost….

That didn’t help NO cause one bit.

And even more so, why did Dallas become a major city?
Dallas is good at evolving itself. Cotton & Cattle-> Oil -> Semiconductors -> Corporate Headquarter Locations. Upper class North Texans have a "medium peice of a huge pie is better than a huge peice of small pie" mentality that you don't see in other places.

And what caused that? Actions of Louisiana politicians, possibly?
