I used to be squarely in the corner of “they should pay for pride country and team”. After attending several Ryder Cups and following it on TV and social media if come to realize that the PGA is essentially printing money from this. Big TV deal, big sponsors, a crapload of money from massive suites and last but not least merchandising through the roof
And you don’t pay the biggest content providers- the players.

And you expect them to make almost endless public appearances and to speak to media on demand.

So the PGA makes them sign a contract to take part. Yes they get expenses paid and some good PR for playing. On the other hand the PGA gives $200k to each players charity. So it’s $ 2.2 million to charity. I suspect it’s a drop in the bucket when compared to the total that the PGA is netting on this. The players understand this and using the leverage of LIV they are getting confident enough to ask about it. I for one would want to know where all of that money is going.

I never thought I’d say this but I agree with Cantlay and Xanders dad on this. If I’m him I’m asking for an explanation of where the money is going.

PGA is all about the money. There were more commercials than even a regular tour event, which made for a bad viewing experience and makes the PGA look greedy.

The Ryder cup is valuable because the best players play, without them it’s a glorified Walker cup and very few would watch. They should stop using patriotism as a cover for their greed and pay them

For context, this isn’t the first time Ryder Cup players have made a stink about not getting paid. There was a similar push in either the 90’s or early 00’s by Tiger and Phil. That’s how they ended up getting the charitable donation. The PGA of America should at least be forthcoming about what they’re doing with the money, because it doesn’t seem to be going back to their members.

But how much should they make is the real question? How much is enough? Would these guys even give two shits if they’re just there to collect a paycheck?

It’s a slippery slope to go down.

I’m sure plenty well but this is a petty thing to care about.

It's really not. Even after this post, posters are basing opinions on this mistake.

I think most of us are ignorant on the extent of this. What do you think you know?

Imagine being a grown arse man and having your dad talk to the media.

This is why our soft arse team got their butts spanked.

Cantlay, Homa, and Burns were the only three Americans in positive cumulative strokes gained.

Clark, Spieth, Thomas, Morikawa and Fowler were awful.

Sounds like the major issue was the PGA trying to financially capitalize from Netflix on the players NLI and those players weren't being compensated for it. This is why the team unanimously voted to kick Netflix out of the team room and meetings.

I would have an issue if someone signed an agreement where they cashed in on my popularity and I wasn't compensated for it nor had any editing rights of my personal conversations with other players.

The Irish Independent: "Xander Schauffele was threatened with Ryder Cup removal from US team over Netflix row"

Xander Schauffele risked being thrown off the USA Ryder Cup team for refusing to sign a participation contract which would have allowed fly-on-the-wall Netflix docu-series Full Swing access to the Team USA locker room.

It was widely reported before last weekend’s Ryder Cup in Rome that Schauffele and his closest friend in the USA locker room, Patrick Cantlay, had led a move to block Netflix’s access to the team room as they felt players should be remunerated for their participation.

What was not known was quite how close Schauffele came to losing his spot on the team as a result of that stance.

Everyone was fine with it until Xander and Cantlay got involved. They then put it to a vote and kept it out to eliminate the controversy.

The Euros allowed the cameras in their team room

Pretty sure Stefan isn't Xander's spokesman, he just talks to anyone who will listen.

I agree with these players. They should get paid. Why should they not get paid?

Was the television broadcasted for free? Who made the money from the ticket sales to attend the event?

O/u 15 people getting the pga tour and pga of America confused as this thread goes on

Apparently the PGA Tour gets their cut

The PGA (of America) uses this money, and the PGA Tour gets 20 percent that goes into the retirement of every member. The 12 players supposedly need to eat it and their intellectual property gets abused for the benefit of 200 other people. That’s not right.

Don't play then, its not mandatory. You can't lose your job for it.

No one is tuning into the Ryder Cup for specific players, people aren't like oh, patrick Cantlay is playing, let me turn it on. They are watching because its america vs europe.

That may be true to an extent, but the Walker Cup and Solheim Cup would be bigger if that was fully true.

It's hard for me to disagree with this, but then the captain's picks give me pause.

Exactly. It's already a buddy club. So if everyone that made the team gets $2mm, why wouldn't someone just pick their buddy?

Also, the exposure players receive from the Ryder Cup directly plays into the PIP, and they're in every elevated event.

Just use the standings and take the top 12, it would mean more to the players than b.s. like you can’t leave JT at home

I'm pretty sure both sides have had more success with less automatic qualifiers.

They just need to pick better team fits with captain picks and get to become buddies instead of established buddies.
