Get a Tacoma for yourself

Hand the 4runner down to the kids. When you need another vehicle find another older used 4runner and give to them.

OP, from your post it’s pretty obvious that you should keep the 4Runner for yourself and buy an old cheap used Toyota (Honda is comparable IMO) for the kids.

You should already be passing your knowledge of cars down to all three of your children. With that knowledge should come an appreciation of money and how expensive it is to insure cars for careless (aka all) teenagers.
The three kids should learn how to share one car and how to negotiate with their sibs who does what and what things don't get done.
They may not need to have their activities 24/7.

And no offense but I don't put much stock in your opinion after you claimed that dude's $100 gift card he accidently posted in another thread, and gave it back after being called out over it (and edited your post that said "haha thanks for the $100")

that's fine if that's how you want to see it but its not actually how it went completely. i don't even use uber and have no use for this $100,

I have 3 kids. I bought a high mileage beater for their high school days. This was shared and handed down as each went off to college. I purchased a better used car for them to take to college. I sold the beater when the last one graduated HS.

This is where I am in about a year. I’ll be doing this.

My first born wrecked the shite out of the F 150 I gave him. I repaired the first mess but no the second, third, fourth and fifth events. It was still running when he got rid of it though it looked like hell. Fast forward ten years and I gave he and his wife an Acura MDX.

You have a lot of expense looking you in the eyes with those three kids and your desire for the truck.

The Mrs got an envy for a new vehicle and I kick my own a$$ for trading in her 135K mile, 2016 SR5 4Runner.

Now, kind of at the intersection you’re in - the oldest needs a ride and I about have myself talked into letting him have my fairly cherry 2017 SR5 Tacoma with 68K on the odometer and having an excuse to grab a new TRD Pro when available.

But man - I hate parting with my plain jane Taco. The way I maintain it, and with the sub 10,000 mile years it sees…thing should last forever.

Of course, giving it to a teenager (even an older one) shortens that life expectancy….

For one, it's a lot harder to text and drive when you're driving a manual.

Which just means they’ll be more dangerous when they ultimately do it.

Any parent who pays attention or actually remembers their youth will realize this. Kids do kid things, whatever that is now. Adding one more thing to pay attention to won't mean they won't do those things, it just means they have one more distraction in the mix.

FTR, my second car was a stick. As was one other I had. Few things are more fun than driving a stick when you're young. Since I got a pickup, I have not had those, that's been a few decades now

My son’s car is a manual and the rear end gets loose at will…not that it’s overly powerful…it’s just a stick with narrow tires…and I’m currently looking for a place to repair a front rim. They’re powder coated matte black and a $1000+ new from the dealer. I asked what he did, but he’s not near as good as I was making stories that sound plausible.

Don't expect the recipient to take as good care of it as you did.

We gave a pretty much ding free one away and within 6 months, when my wife (no pics) saw it, she nearly burst into tears.

I have a 2011 4Runner (SR5 4WD), purchased brand new. ~140k miles and will last until 400k miles easily I feel. I love it and really don't want to get a new vehicle, but have a dilemma.

Subtle I have a decent 4Runner to give my kid brag.

First, he calls and says his low pressure light is on…it’s a cold morning so I tell him to just drive it to school. I go with a pump to air it up and I find this on his passenger front:

Uh, wow. His story sucked too…there was road work he tried to go around and must have clipped the curb…I just look and stare with disbelief.

If I was a kid now and knew I wasn't getting a nice car with no scratches then I would want a 1990s Toyota Landcruiser. Gas prices be damned! I just think those cars still look cool.

He's averaging 11,200 miles a year right now.

For him to get to 400k that's nearly 36 years.

That's like someone driving a 1988 vehicle right now as a full time car.

I was referring to the wear and tear a couple of teens can put on a vehicle, especially one they didn't put out their hard earned money to have.

I know all about vehicles with low miles. My current daily driver is an 06 Silverado I got in October of 05 and it has just over 75K on the odometer. I'm averaging just slightly over 4K a year.

What would be the different in insurance if you gave them the 4Runner vs buying them a newer vehicle?
