If you ever worked in the oil patch in Texas panhandle, West Texas, or New Mexico. Allsups burritos with plenty of taco sauce were good enough for 3 meals a day.

Thanks for posting the NYT article featuring a Mississippi born photojournalist.

Best of all, the post introduced me to online magazine Bitter Southern which has good stories and great pics about our south. LINK

its funny that NYC treat bodega like some cultural icon, but corner stores in the south have been a thing for just as long if not longer.

There is a hole in the wall gas station in Denham, off Eden Church, just past the tracks, on the edge of the hood, owned by foreigners, that just might have the best hamburger in the state.

unrelated to this thread, but i spent some time in the upper midwest this summer and it was so weird seeing all of the gas stations/corner stores/etc. owned and operated by white people who are from the area

You’re one of those self entitled, angry people that takes a dump at public establishments just so you don’t have to use your own toilet paper, aren’t you? Then get mad when they lock rabid maniacs like you out of their bathrooms.

I worked for a large convenience store chain. At a phone conference a story from the Nawthern press came up about Wa-Wa and their market concept. Per the article they create a warm , fuzzy feeling in their stores (up there) such that customers actually hold the door open for each other. Our moderator was a Georgia gob, and I remarked to him how remarkable they must be to get yankees to be courteous. He couldn't laugh as the group was multi-cultural

I can get better food at a gas station on highway 30 than I could get in most Michelin star restaurants in NYC. Fact

That's what I do, and I'm "one of you". Buc-ee's is Grade A people watching.

I still buy my gas station burger and fishing worms down the way from the nearest Buc-ee's, but I go to the Walmart of gas stations when I want to see the rednecks in all their glory.
