Soccer is like a soap opera, three months later nothing has changed. Basketball is the other extreme, a scoring shite show.

And yet MJ loved Coach Smith like a father. Read up on it. One of the most influential people in his life and career.

Dean Smith was quoted many times as saying the implementation of the shot clock helped UNC, who more often than not was a superior team. Made it far more difficult for underdogs.

What took so long for people to demand a shot clock ?

We didn't have internet message boards for people to complain about it....

John Wooden once said: "I believe Dean over-coached". Referring to the 4-corners. Only man who could stop Michael Jordan, was Dean Smith...is the old joke.

Wooden was one of the first to run a fast-break full court pressure offense while so many held the ball.

North Carolina students wanted Smith fired his first 5 years.

UCLA would win games 90-60.

North Carolina would win games 55-45.

There was a team in our league in HS that had an entire D1 roster and beat the brakes off of everyone straight up. There was one team that ran 4 corners all game and ended up beating them 10-8 or something ridiculous like that.

I agree that March Madness diluted the regular season, but so what. The regular season in every sport is about getting better and preparing for a playoff run. The regular season is not about being perfect. That’s why I’m thrilled that we are another 6-8 years away from a 24plus team football playoff. You shouldn’t have to lose hope after a loss or two in any sport let alone a sport like football where injuries play such a vital role. Yes, I do believe that a playoff game should mean a whole lot more than a game in September or October when coaches are still figuring out their team.

Dale Brown used to do that in the early 80's.

The game is just different now, not really much in common.

Nobody cares now if you have a good 7 ft center, which used to be key. It's not really important to have a forward with tons of moves around the basket. You want guys who can shoot 25 ft jumpers regularly.

It's okay to like both styles, but I do miss the older game.

Sounds familiar. Was that a McKinley game in the mid 2000s?

I believe there was a team (Xavier ?) that played keep away against Georgetown in March Madness ~1983 .

People were upset that Georgetown’s possessions were being limited and cried foul.

I remember Dale Brown playing 4 corners around 1981 or so.

I know I'm in the minority but I loved the 4 corner offense. Crisp passing and a backdoor layup every 2 minutes = Go Princeton!

If you define basketball as only scoring then I understand the hatred for the 4 corners offense. But it’s not that easy to keep the ball away from another team that knows how to defend man to man. And it allowed for less athletic teams to compete with more athletic teams. It had its place and I liked it …also don’t really care for the shot clock either
