Moving players from one side of the ball to the other 1) sets them back in their progressions at their normal positions, 2) communicates to them that they are at the back of the line at their normal positions, and 3) encourages them to look elsewhere in the transfer portal.

If they have only been only a backup to this point, number 3 is true anyway and 1 and 2 are moot regardless.

Sometimes you find a Corey Webster or Marcus Spears.

Or

4) Give them a chance to make an immediate impact on the success of the team and play sooner.

Moving an OL to the DL is not unheard of. At the end of the day, the team’s success is more important than an individual. Either contribute to the team or move on.

I can’t remember all the position switches at LSU that helped both the team and the player. Josh Reed started as a tailback, as just one example. Dumb comment is dumb.

You are not wrong, but that is only the player perspective

From the team perspective, it tells you just how bad the situation is

If Kelly is going to achieve the level of success he has the past two seasons with this upcoming schedule sans a Heisman winning QB, some DTs better materialize

I'm not mad at him about it and have confidence he'll get it done, but definitely not quick enough to make the playoff this year without them

That can be the case but some guys will like the position change. When I played in high school I was very happy to move from the OL to the DL. Of course I didn’t have a pro career ahead of me though.

YEah. No one has ever been successful after changing positions. Thanks for the reminder, Scotcho.

Or says there is an opportunity for playing time on the other side of the ball if you want to try it.

If you move a player they no longer have a “normal” position….they have a new position.

That’s one view.
Ask Marcus Spears if things worked out for him. It’s all about perspective and attitude.

Irrelevant if they are playing at a new position

Because they are. They likely already know that.

They need to cut the roster down anyway to make the 85 man limit.

moving a player from OL to DL

1. helps the team
2. gives that player a chance to see the field quicker
3. means the coaches who know a lot more about football than the player sees something and the player should maybe trust that. Or transfer and make room for the incoming class. I don't care.
