The romance of being on a catamaran would quickly fade for me.
A few three month stints every now and then yeah, but 10. Hell no.

I do, but that wasn't the question.
I was trying to seriously think and the oldest person I'm friends with is 43.

I’m retiring next year at 60.
my best friend retired at 50.
I do have other friends that got rich early but they still work. I on the other hand would have quit immediately

One of my friends started a business in his mid 20’s and sold it and retired at 48 a few years ago.
He got divorced right before then too.

I'd do it today (age 55) if I could figure out how to pay for the health insurance. That's the part that worries me.

I'm about to retire after next school year at 52. My wife retired last year at 48. Now, this is not true ""retirement". We'll both have to work doing something for 8-@ years or so. My wife got a pretty cushy admin job at a private school that pays her pretty well with health insurance. She makes about 24K more with her salary plus retirement. I'll only need to clear 1,500-1,700 a month with my retirement to make around what I do a month now. Anything above that is gravy. It will be nice not to be in the prison of a classroom or tied down to coaching after 29 years of it.

This seems to be the biggest stickler for a lot of folks.

I can retire with pension at age 49... Do I see that happening? Not necessarily.

I guess he has no children.
The obligation to children ends when they reach the age of majority or finish undergrad. I would not expect children to stay close to me, so could see them. I would expect them to live their life the am way they see fit. If I am 50 and decide to sell everything and go sailing, the kids will be fine with it for the same reasons. They would expect me to live my life.

My uncle retired in 92 as a full bird colonel from the Air Force. He opted to take an early retirement. He was 48. He might have worked for a couple of years off and on until he died about three years ago. He basically sat on his back porch the last 27 years of his life.

I came from dirt poor in North Louisiana cotton patch in the 50s.
Spent seven years in the Navy. Then went to college on GI Bill and wife working. We put two boys through college, paid off my home, and retired at 56.
It was done by thrifty living and investing in Mutual Funds. Went through the Dot Com bubble, Real Estate Bubble, and 9/11. All three devastated the Market. Never sold, held on and just sat them out.

Rarely last 10 years. Would love to do this for 2-3 years though.

I intend to retire in a little more than 16 years. Should be right before my 55th birthday.

It’s kind of messed up that you’d sell assets to buy a money pit
Kids are screwed dude
We’re never gonna own anything and be eating bugs in 5 years. At least leave your kids your boomer mcmansion
