If it’s gonna get treated like this, like the nfl, then they should allow colleges to cut players who aren’t performing up to expectations

They can. There is no "employment" contract between the player and the team. The only "contract" is the 1 year scholarship agreement to attend the school. The NIL contracts are not through the school.

Colleges should never have to worry about an 85 limit, cuts should be open to be made during season and after or before, just like pros

A coach can kick a player off the team ("cut him") during the season without any real recourse from the player.

While NIL contracts are, in essence, "pay for play" contracts, they aren't employment contracts. Everything you are saying should be allowed IS allowed. A coach can dismiss a player from the team at any time.

Contrary to popular belief, scholarships are no longer the “1 year deals” they used to be. At least not for autonomy conferences (power 5).

In the power 5 conferences, scholarship non-renewal is treated effectively the same way as scholarship cancellation. The team has to have a valid, non-athletic reason to decline to renew a scholarship for a player with remaining eligibility. There is a list of valid reasons in the D1 manual that includes stuff like code of conduct violations, failing to meet academic requirements, etc. - but it’s explicitly against the rules to non-nenew based on athletic performance.

So while a coach can theoretically dismiss a player for any reason, that doesn’t mean the coach can pull (or non-renew) the player’s scholarship for any reason. And for the time being, the scholarship limit still acts as an effective cap on the “recruited” roster.

This rule was implemented to eliminate the practice at top programs of oversigning and “processing” players to get back under the limit. That said, we all know players still get processed. But nowadays it requires at least some amount of cooperation from the player. Theoretically, a player who is told to look elsewhere can say “no.”

I just think players this young need to have some type of education on NIL or whatever it is. Everyone should! Schools included. We need the same rules to apply for everyone and there be no huge monetary advantage for the schools actually playing for championships. Make it where the player can make his money up front but then also make his own money off of his name and playing ability. If they do it this way, it’ll be just like it was before, except it’s out in the open and all players can make a little money to play football.

IMO it’s not good for the players who are young and can be manipulated by money signs. Then they mature and realize they made a mistake. That sets everyone back and isn’t good for the sport or the players. Put price tags on the initial money for each position. Now if that player makes a few million because he’s a great player and advocate for himself then so be it. You can’t do a thing about that. But everyone should have a fair chance to land any of these guys and all be on the same playing field.

No team should be able to offer 10million for each position player where these other teams can only offer 2 million. I’m just using any number. It should be maxed for QB position at 1.5 million, RB 750k, DL 1.2 million and so on. Now not every team will be able to offer that but at least it’s much more balanced that way. Maybe team A already has 3 solid QBs and doesn’t feel any of the QBs are worth that and they rather wait for the portal to get an experienced QB and will offer them 1 million. That will be up to the teams needs and evaluation.

Each team only has up to 25 million to spend each year. They have to figure out where they want to spend that money and on who. That way no team can simply max out every position player. Everyone has a shot at the player and the player now isn’t pressured to simply take the money, they have to make a real decision for themselves. That’s the best way to handle this imo. Clean, professional as possible, everyone makes money, everyone is even, everyone has a chance and it takes the pressure off of the players to simply take money.

You can actually build a team like this and keep your players happy. Maybe even do like a freshman/rookie payment where the freshman aren’t paid as much up front until they actually perform. That’s how the pros do it. Rookies don’t get the money that the proven players do. It needs to be merit based on both sides and equality for all teams/players in the big conferences. If Texas or A&M sucks, they shouldn’t be able to just buy their way to the top. If I don’t perform at work, I don’t get rewarded, but I should also be given a chance to develop my skills, perform and then get rewarded. Not quit my job or get fired immediately because I either wasn’t paid enough or was paid too much to start with.

Nope. Bad take

The critical element missing is that you can’t sign new players during the season to replace the ones who are being cut.

I agree more with the poster you responded to because of this. This needs to start being treated as a job so that the “employers” will be less powerless. They should be able to fire and hire players at anytime (especially during the regular season).
