I don't know that Ive considered them a budget airline in perhaps 10+ years. They are not the cheapest. And there is no chance of an upgrade. Their budget-orientation of the early years gave them a good name with casual travelers and their policies keep the casual travelers.

I avoid unless timing demands a Southwest ride.

SWA isn’t at Frontier / JetBlue levels of “Greyhound Of The Sky” but it is decidedly at a different tier of carrier than Delta, United, and American in price and business model.
