I'm sure it's not 100% historically accurate but they handle the race issue about as well as they could.
Some of the sports stuff is definitely dramatized (which I get). For example, they actually kicked the shite out of their opponent in the championship game. But I get why a movie would make that change. I don’t believe Sunshine ever did schoolyard yoga.
And when Petey passed away a few years ago, he maintained that he didn’t have a fumbling problem.

Jones later became a beloved security guard at T.C. Williams, where sometimes the male students would joke with him about his character’s famous fumbling problem in the movie, which Jones would later say was fictional.
“And I did not fumble the football,” Jones said in a 2014 story in The Washington Post.
Love that movie. One of my favorite in the sports category.

from what I've read, a LOT of it was changed to make a better movie.
Gerry and Julius were nowhere near as close as the movie portrays. They were friends, but not "brothers" like in the movie.
The racial tension on the team was way overblown in the film. Supposedly they were just like another team as far as closeness or chemistry pretty much from the word jump.
Gerry's wreck didn't happen until after the season was over. He played in that championship game.
the school had already been integrated for several years before the movie shows it to have happened.
The Gettysburg scene is mostly fiction. They didn't run there before sunrise. They took a bus and a guided tour during normal hours.
etc.
