This is definitely the civil rights movement of our time to get behind.

The WNBA plans to commit $50 million over the next two years to provide full-time charter flight service for its teams during the season, the league's commissioner announced Tuesday in a move that addresses years of player safety concerns.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a meeting with sports editors that the league will launch a charter program "as soon as we can get planes in places." She said it's projected to cost around $25 million per year for the next two seasons.

That means no more long security lines, bodyguards in public spaces, cramped legroom or layovers for the professional athletes who have been lobbying for better travel since long before Caitlin Clark's celebrity brought newfound interest to the league.

Most importantly, Lynx forward Napheesa Collier says, it means safety for the players.

"All these players and these faces are becoming so popular that it really is about that as much as it as about recovery," Collier said, noting how last season Brittney Griner was harassed by what the WNBA called a "provocateur" while traveling commercial.

Surely the girls/boys/they/them will bow down and thank Caitlyn Clark for this, right?

I am really rooting for this league to fold, but I don’t think it will because the NBA wants to keep it.

And yet players and teams are shitting on Caitlin Clark who 100% made this happen. What a confused League.

I’d be interested to know if this extra $50 million comes out of the NBA owners split of revenue only or if it comes out of the players split as well.

Honestly man good for them. Not coming out of my check and if the NBA is OK with the extra expense then I hope they enjoy the upgrades.

That seems high, comes out to just over $2 million per wnba team. NBA teams spend around $3 million per year each and travel a lot more in a bigger footprint.

Each NBA team plays 41 road games in a season and each wnba team plays 18 road games.

Imagine if my company lost $1.2 million last year and the next year I go to my boss and say I’m going to need another $5M in my budget for private flights

This is likely happening because too much of the league bitched about one team (NYC?) doing it when none of them were supposed to.

Considering they still aren’t profitable, the reasoning behind commercial over chartered was to cut overhead for all teams so they could be on an even playing field.

It's honestly crazy they were making them fly commercial to begin with. The WNBA is a joke

I know four WNBA players.
Griner - because we traded a weapons dealer for her
Plum - because she has that video of her rocketing a T-shirt into the stands
Clark - because I'm breathing
Reese - because I'm on this board

But that's better than MSL

Every NBA player is going to see a new unexplained fee/tax appear on their paycheck. Do the math ~550 NBA players are going to foot the bill for the 50 million.
