I worked with "at-risk" kids some time back in a residential job training program. Some of them were at the center by choice, others because their families made them go.
I took a liking to one young man who was genuinely interested in bettering himself. He knew he had to start by earning his GED, which he did. He was so pumped and proud of himself.
Earning his GED meant that he could go home for the weekend. His family was planning a big party for him, and he was excited.
I saw him walking on campus the following Monday, and I asked him how the weekend went. He showed me his award for earning his GED - the black eye his uncle gave him for "trying to be white". So sad.
