It's definitely the fast lane to an Associate Dean level position in academia. People who contributed little as Associate Professors and no hope of making Professor, can work their way into an Associate Dean's or even Vice President appointment in offices of Diversity.
Fifteen years ago there was an Associate Dean or two at the University level. Now every college has an independent Dean (in some cases, several) with an independent staff. A large undergraduate college at a state institution might have as many as 8-10 FTEs to go along with a couple of Associate Deans. You want to know why college tuition is insane? That college will have anywhere from $600-750K in staff salary and benefits tied-up in an office that doesn't teach a single class. And of course they need budget for programming. Let's call the whole operation a million. At $25K annual tuition, that college has to enroll 40 students just to break even on the DEI office.
