In their limited defense, they didn’t come up with it at least, those ideas go back to Marxists in the American university system and the civil rights movement.

Great book but that oft-repeated quote about the Comanche/Cheyenne/Lakota being the "best light cavalry in the world" is just absurd. The various cavalry officers it's been attributed to obviously had reason to talk up their opponents but regardless of the skill of individual fighters the quality of the mounts and equipment just didn't measure up to the other contenders. The Ottoman horsebow alone makes it laughable. Again, great book, just something that's always annoyed me.

The Heart of Everything That Is by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin is an amazing retelling of Red Cloud's war. It shows not only the savage nature of the American natives, but the stark contrasts and hostilities between the tribes.

The idea of natives on the continent as a singular, conquered people is an ironically white European construct. For example, its doubtful the Lakota or Navajo were even aware of the existence of many Eastern tribes prior to European arrival.

There are a lot of irrational philosophies that are only possible through the peace afforded by pragmatic men.

But, but, but . . . . "Diversity is our strength"

Who in their right mind ever believed that?
