I'm Apache and have the whole membership card thing and Matt is 1000% correct.
I read a book about the Comanches "Empire of the Summer Moon" - one slave woman they took had a baby. After the baby was born the woman's work output decreased.
They started to torture the baby to incentivize the woman to work harder but she eventually had a breakdown and cried while her baby was screaming. The Comanches couldn't get her to go back to work so they tied the newborn infant to the back of a horse and drug it through a cactus patch ripping the flesh off of the child. It didn't die though, they had to use a club to bust its head open.
Make no mistake the monsters the settlers were dealing with- savages is the only appropriate term.

Great book but that oft-repeated quote about the Comanche/Cheyenne/Lakota being the "best light cavalry in the world" is just absurd. The various cavalry officers it's been attributed to obviously had reason to talk up their opponents but regardless of the skill of individual fighters the quality of the mounts and equipment just didn't measure up to the other contenders. The Ottoman horsebow alone makes it laughable. Again, great book, just something that's always annoyed me.
