why would you write a novel on a company computer and not have a personal copy. and he had his crypto accounts open on it? why would you do that in the first place?
As soon as he said that I thought the same.

A. Never put your personal stuff in a company computer unless you are backing it up offline to another device, or online to a personal cloud.

B. For being a critical thinker, he sure didn't think critically when he said he saw this coming but didn't realize when it was going to happen. A critical thinker in that situation would have gone to Amazon and ordered a portable hard drive and moved all of his files to it immediately as soon as his spidey senses told him "my days here are numbered.".

Why was this recorded to begin with?

Don't know.

Could be the plan was to set the teacher up the whole time and even though they didn't get anything to incriminate him with, they went forward with it anyway.

Critical thinking is like gold. It's valuable and it's getting very rare. It can be employed in lots of subjects taught in H.S. Why isn't it? IDK, probably either dumb teachers or obsession with a kid's self esteem. Or both.

There is no limit to stupidity - it is a black hole of idiocy.

there may well be an upper limit to intelligence - or at least how to measure it.
